Raymond F. Herner

Raymond F. Herner, 90, a resident of the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital formerly of 27 Walnut St., Towanda, Pa., passed away Monday morning, Dec. 27, 2010 at Memorial Hospital, N. Towanda Twp., Pa.

Born Sept. 23, 1920 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late Floyd and Catherine Berger Herner. Raymond was a graduate of Beaumont High School Class of 1938 and later attended Williamsport Technical Institute. On Dec. 26, 1943 he married the former Helen J. Wilbur in Beaumont, Pa. Raymond served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II as a surgical technician in North Africa. Upon returning home from the military, Raymond was employed by the Eclipse in Elmira, N.Y. He was employed by E.I. DuPont in Towanda for 8 years and was later employed by Sylvania Electric in Towanda for 25 years until his retirement in 1985. Raymond was a former amateur radio operator and also enjoyed radio controlled airplanes and boats as his hobbies.

He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42.

Surviving are: his son and daughter-in-law, Mark Alan Herner and Janet McMinn Herner of Severna Park, Md.; two granddaughters, Mary Jo Herner and her husband, James Wilson of New Orleans, La., Cindy Miracle of Royston, Ga.; several great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Greta Herner of Hampton, Va.; sisters, Margaret Siperko of Beaumont, Pa., Arvilla Kieper of Miners Mills, Pa.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen J. Wilbur Herner on March 21, 2010; a son, Dennis Robert Herner on April 7, 1999; and his brother, Melvin L. Herner on Dec. 25, 2010.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa.
