Raymond Sally Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 1 to Feb. 2, 2011.
SALLY, Raymond Wilfrid Founder of Voyageur Travel and Picadilly Bus Tours Ray passed away peacefully on January 29th, 201l, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81. Dearly loved husband of Mary (nee Muldoon), cherished father of Michael (Dee), Robert, Lynda (Ron Atwill) and Marc; loving step-father of Matthew Roy and treasured "Gramps" of Jason, Krista and Corson. He will be dearly missed by his extended family and many friends. Ray was an entrepreneur through and through and enriched those around him with his humour, stories, jokes and especially his books of poetry. Ray's earthly presence is gone but his spiritual presence is ours forever. A special thanks to Tim and Sharon Nolan for their unwavering love and devotion given to Ray during this time. The family would also like to thank Dr. Howard Cohen and the CCAS as well as all the staff and volunteers at the May Court Hospice for their compassion, wonderful care and support. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:30 am at St Augustine Parish, 1060 Baseline Road. The family will be present one hour prior to the mass to receive friends. Following the mass, friends and family are invited to join us for a reception in the parish hall. Interment will take place on a beautiful spring day at St. Luke's Church in Beechgrove, Quebec. Those wishing may make a donation in memory of Ray to the May Court Hospice at 114 Cameron Avenue, Ottawa, K1S 0X1. Online condolences may be made at www.colefuneralservices.com

I was saddened upon learning of Ray's passing. But, as I reflected on those who have passed through our local travel community, I have only good memories of Ray, along with my husband Ken and how they were the movers and shakers of a very exciting, satisfying and rewarding times past. I'm sure he had a fantastic trip and is enjoying the company of many old buddies, recounting many of their adventures and telling their usual jokes. Remember the good times.

In 1971, I didn’t want a full time job, so I joined Voyageur Travel because Ray offered me a job working as much or as little as I chose. It wasn’t long before I was working 8+ hour days, and had my daughters round the dining room table writing tickets at night!
I worked closely with Ray for over 20 years and I can honestly say that, through thick and thin, through good times and not so good times, there was never a dull day at Voyageur. We ran charters to Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, to Mazatlan as well as to Tampa, Florida. There was always something exciting going on. Of course, we weren’t only involved in selling travel, but, at various times, we were buying and selling suitcases, cigars, turtle steaks and clocks, as well as Piccadilly Bus Tours.
Ray, your enthusiastic approach to every facet of the travel industry and life never ceased to amaze and inspire me. I have often said that I consider you “immortal” and indeed, you will live on in all our hearts forever.

To my sister Mary and the Sally family,
Our brother in law was special in so many ways. We will miss his humour, jokes and just being "Ray". We have enjoyed so many pool parties and Christmas gatherings through out the years. Mary enriched his life in so many ways and in return he loved her dearly. Well Ray I know you will be a joy to every one up there in heaven. I hope they have playing cards for Euchre, Black Jack and TV's to watch your favourite sports. Until we meet again.
Love Shirley & Johnny

Mary, Lynda and the Sally Family,

Working at Voyageur was so much like being with family. Although Ray took awhile to stop calling me 'hey you' and finally learned my name, he always treated me with respect and a twinkle in his eyes. Best boss ever! Rest in Peace, you sure deserve it after all your accomplishments. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Our sincere sympathy to the Sally family.
I had the pleasure of working for Ray at Voyageur travel. As I mentioned in an email to Lynda earlier this week, he was the best boss I worked for in all my years in the travel industry. He had a good sense of humour, was a great charmer when he needed miracles done for travel for his friends(!), and a real entrepreneur, including his poetry.
Our hearts go out to you in your loss,

Katherine and Michael Durrer

Ray and Lynda were like family for me growing up at Voyageur. Ray was welcoming and always laughing which made everyone else jolly. I thought all bosses were like Ray until I began working myself then I realized how unique and special Ray was.

My sympathies to you all for this loss.

Truly a very sad time for the Sally Family.Words are difficult to find to truly express the kindness, and friendliness of this man.Ray certainly had his clallenges with his health in recent years. He did not back down from any of these crosses that he had to bear.He can now enjoy his well deserved reward

May he rest in peace
