Raymond Wingate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2025.
Raymond Wingate, Sr., 84, passed away on February 12, 2007, in Keystone Heights, Florida.

Born on June 23, 1922, in Bainbridge, Georgia, Ray lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his community. His career was one of commitment to both public service and civic engagement. He served as a Trustee on the Clay Electric Board beginning in 1974, worked as a Constable for Clay County, and dedicated himself as a firefighter for the U.S. military.

Ray's military service was a defining part of his life. As a Sergeant Major for the Military Police (317th), he served with distinction during World War II in the 101st Automatic Weapons department. His dedication to fellow veterans continued throughout his life as a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4904 and Middleburg Lodge Post 107. He was also an active member of the American Legion, Post 202.

Beyond his professional and military commitments, Ray had a passion for the outdoors. He found great joy in fishing, hunting, and especially gardening-tending to his fruit and vegetable patches with care and devotion. His love for nature was matched by his enthusiasm for community service; he participated in numerous projects and collaborated with various nonprofits and membership organizations to better the lives of those around him.

In his youth, Ray was also a Golden Glove Boxer, demonstrating both discipline and determination-qualities that carried through every aspect of his life. A man of faith, he was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Keystone Heights, Florida, where he sang in the choir and contributed to the church community in meaningful ways.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his children Karen Creal, Ray Wingate Jr., Jack Wingate; step-sons Don and Mike; as well as several grandchildren who will cherish his memory. He was predeceased by his mother, Johnnie Virginia; sisters Myra Neil and Aleta; and brother Walter.

Ray's legacy is one of service-to his country, his community, and his family. His memory will live on through those who knew him and through the many contributions he made throughout his lifetime.
