REKHA DIVGIKAR-SURESH Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2015.
DIVGIKAR-SURESH, Rekha. March 28, 1948 - March 29, 2015,

Passed away peacefully at the Jewish General Hospital, after having been in a month-long, stroke-induced coma. She had turned 67 the day before her passing. Rekha will be deeply missed by her husband of 36 years Suresh and son Siddharth. Pre-deceased by her brother Sandeep in 2001, she is survived by her siblings Alka, Kanaka, and Pradeep, all in India. She will no doubt be fondly remembered by her extended family & friends in Montreal, in India, and elsewhere.

Rekha was a fiercely independent woman who had a healthy interest in living the good life. After arriving in Montreal in 1980, she found time to complete a double-major in philosophy/psychology, a Masters degree in philosophy, and to become a certified aerobics instructor, all while raising her son during his formative years.

She had a passion for keeping her body & mind in shape: she routinely worked out at a local gym and could recite from memory several chapters of the Bhagavad Gita and other Sanskrit texts. Her secular outlook enabled her to meditate at St. Joseph's Oratory every Friday without fail.

Despite having undergone a heart valve replacement in 2010, she went on to travel across the world, and perform adventurous activities such as zip-lining.

Our heartfelt thanks to the nurses of ICU1 & to Drs. P. McMillan & S. Dial.

May her soul rest in Peace. OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI !!!

First met Rekha when I was on a visit to Bombay from my boarding school in South India. A year later we were in the same college and we became very good friends over the next couple of years in the late 60's. Along with a couple of other friends "Manoply" & "Bhel Puri" became the norm every evening.
I immigrated to Canada and Rekha a few years later now united in marriage with Suresh. Rekha & I soon bacame "family friends" and frequently kept in touch with long telephone conversations from Montreal to Toronto & Vancouver.
During my days in Toronto I frequented Montreal on work and often met up with Rekha. My last visit was a walk with Rekha and Suresh around a beautiful park in Montreal. She promised she would visit us in Vancouver. I am disappointed, he never did.
Our birthdays were 8 days apart & Rekha never failed to mail me a birthday card which would always arrive the day before my birthday. I will miss this next year!
Suresh & Siddharth, my sincere condolences.

This is the tribute I posted on my Facebook timeline to my beloved sister Rekha who inspired me in so many ways and has forever pushed the envelope in every pursuit of excellence that she embarked upon:

With profound grief I have to inform the passing away of my sister Rekha in Montreal today.

I received a call from my brother in law Suresh that my beloved sister Rekha who turned 67 yesterday, breathed her last in the early hours today (4.30 am Canada Time). Rekha had slipped into deep coma on 26th February after she suffered a massive stroke. She continued to be in Coma due to irretrievable damage suffered by her brain stent. After being in a state of Coma for 30 days she left for her heavenly abode this morning. She was moved from the ICU last Thursday and was under palliative care ever since. Rekha is survived by her husband Suresh and son Siddharth. She will be cremated in Montreal after a couple of days. Also in grief are my sisters Alka Manjeshwar and Kanaka Adhav and my sister in law Smita Divgikar along with our families, our cousins and other members of our extended families and friends of the family.

I have attempted to post a collection of photos of Rekha available with me right from her childhood till her last visit to India a little over a year ago when she flew down for my nephew Varun's wedding. I am flooded with very fond memories of Rekha who was the oldest amongst the five siblings. She was fiercely independent and started working at a very young age and undertook the responsibility of being a provider for the family. She loved the good life and was in step with the latest trends in fashion. She bought the first refrigerator/storewell cupboard/stereo record player for our home, where I still reside. In fact, the Godrej Cupboard is still being used by my family. She facilitated my first visit to a discotheque (Bullock Cart), first visit to Rhythm House to buy records, first visit to the iconic Cafe Samovar (which is sadly closing down on 31st March), my first visit to a Chinese restaurant ( Gazebo Oriental) all of which are etched in my memory bank. Our thoughts n prayers are with Suresh n Siddharth as we share their pain and grief. We will celebrate her life through everlasting memories of our growing years in Patkar's New Blocks (Wadi) where I still reside. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Dear Suresh and Siddharth,
My husband and I are shocked and stunned to hear of this news. We cannot believe this. I remember Rekha coming so enthusiastically to my weekly class and also how she learnt the verses of the Gita with correct pronunciation. Am extremely intelligent person she was very sincere and honest in whatever she said. This is a very great loss for all of us and especially for you both. May you have the strength and courage to bear this untimely loss with fortitude.

Dear Bob & Siddharth,

Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved wife, as well as your precious and devoted Mom!

We were fortunate to meet Rekha during her brief but vibrant journey through this earth and to have had the priviledge to call her "our friend".

We had many chats, many laughs and wonderful memories of a friendship that spanned over 3 decades!!!

Rekha was a very well-read, well informed and passionate individual, who was honest to a fault.

Her honesty, her up-front nature, her love for life and all the challenges that came with it, and of course her love and respect towards her family and her friends, was something very unique of Rekha...

Also, Rekha always made time for the elderly and the sick... there were many a times that she went to the Seniors' Residence to visit my mom, spend time with her, bring her gifts, especially hand-made (knitted) stuff by Rekha (which she did in her spare time.

Rekha never forgot birthdays or anniversaries and when she wished you, you knew it came from the bottom of her heart... she was that sincere, you felt it.

We were priviledged to have had the good fortune to have spent her last outing on this earth, in our home on Valentine's Day evening, where we had many a laughter and she was actually swaying and dancing to the music before calling it an evening...

We sincerely hope and pray that all the fond memories she made with you - Bob & Siddharth, will help you to somehow come to terms with this unimaginable loss, and be able to have the strength and courage to move forward, knowing that her love and her devotion will always be your guiding light...

We loved you in life Rekha, and you will never be forgotten!

May you rest in peace, dear friend, until we meet again!

Much love & God's blessings,
From your friends: Nelun, Prem, Shanake, Shihara, Shawn & Aunty Marie
