Richard Canady Baxley of Lexington, North Carolina, went to be with his Lord in the early hours of March 28th, 2023. Richard was born and raised in Scotland County, NC, where he received his early education. Later, he graduated from Pfeiffer University and UNC Chapel Hill, receiving his Master's Degree in Public Health. Richard remained dedicated to his work in the public health field until he retired in June 1996. His honors and awards were many during his career, and he was so proud to have served Davidson County as Health Director for at least 21 years.
Richard was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lexington for many years. He was appointed a deacon, served on various committees, and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class.
He is survived by his two loving daughters, Angela (Andy Teague) and April (Mark Galloway). The joys of his life were his three grandchildren Ashley Katlyn Galloway, Trenton Grant Teague (fiancé Morgan Smithey), and Tori Elizabeth Teague.
Richard loved life and nature. He loved his yard, where you could always find him when he was missing. Hunting, fishing, painting, and traveling were his passions. He lived a good, beautiful life and will be missed greatly by those lucky enough to have known him.
Richard was born on January 16th, 1944, and was predeceased by his parents, only brother, and two nephews. His wife, Vicki, was the love of his life, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. She will miss him greatly, as he was such a huge part of her life and heart.
His memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Lexington on April 1st at 2:00 pm with visitation one hour earlier. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County or First Baptist Church of Lexington.

My mother Connie Boner worked with Richard all the years he was the health director. She really valued his support and enjoyed working with him. The years I worked in public health I enjoyed knowing Richard as a fellow professional.

Mr. Baxley was my first health director. He was a great director and I'm glad I got to work with him. He was proud of his daughters and always asked about mine. God bless you and may he rest in peace.

Mr Baxley was a kind and gracious person. I will always be thankful for our paths connecting. Mr Baxley loved his family and the last time we talked he asked me to send him some scriptures and I am so glad I did. Rest easy.

I am very sorry to hear of Richard’s death. My mother worked with him at the Davidson County Health Department and thought very highly of him. Our family will never forget his kindness to her after she retired and the kind remarks he said about her at her funeral in 2008. Rest well!
