Richard Cheney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2024.
Richard Ludell Cheney, born on February 20, 1935, in Mason, Michigan, passed away on October 29, 2024, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Mason, he left a lasting impact on his community and the agricultural industry.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army in Korea following the Korean War. After his military service, he returned to Mason to continue his family's legacy as a fifth-generation farmer. His dedication to farming was evident, as he was instrumental in ensuring the farm's success and continuity through successive generations.

Beyond his farming endeavors, Richard was deeply involved in his community. He held various positions including trustee and treasurer for Aurelius Township, president of the Ingham County Fair Board, and manager of the Ingham County Fair for seven years. His commitment extended as a trustee of Mason First United Methodist Church and as a director and a president of the Dart Bank Board of Directors.

Richard also had a keen interest in real estate, always on the lookout for opportunities to wheel and deal. His business acumen was well-regarded in the community, contributing to his reputation as a respected leader.

A man of joy and generosity, Richard cherished family gatherings and took every opportunity to spend time with his large circle of friends and family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sydney Cheney; daughter, Denise (Jerry) Schaffer; son, David (Laura) Cheney; grandchildren, Chris (Ali) Nammack, Sarah (Michael) Zuspann, Rita Cheney, and Hayden Cheney; great-grandchildren, Ludell, Jane, and Susie Nammack, and Noah and Willow Zuspann; and sister, Phyllis (Arthur) Webster. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludell and Merle Cheney; son, Steven Cheney; and granddaughter, Hannah Cheney.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Mason, on November 8, 2024 with visitation at 10 am followed by the service at 11 am. A luncheon will immediately follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heifer International or the Kirk Gibson Foundation in support of those with Parkinson's Disease, causes close to Richard's heart. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and community service will be remembered by all who knew him.

A warm embrace to all the family from a distant cousin in New York. I met the Cheneys and Richard two years ago on Thanksgiving (2022) and quickly felt the kindness emanating down from the family elders - Richard and Sydney. An amazingly kind and accomplished man, he will be missed, and leaves a very proud legacy.

To all of you I am so very sorry for this loss as I know your husband, father and grandfather was much more than those simple words. He had a heart of gold and immersed himself in all of your lives. Always a gentleman and so endearing, I was graced by his Dynamics each time we met. Sending love to all of you during this difficult time.
