Richard Copeland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 17, 2024.
Richard Alan Copeland, known affectionately as Rich, passed away on June 26, 2024, at the age of 71 at the VA hospital, in Long Beach, CA. Born on March 28, 1953, in Alhambra, CA, he was the cherished son of Romie and Helen Copeland, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his brother, Mark Copeland.

Rich's early education was completed at St. Christopher Parish School, followed by Bishop Amat Memorial High School and Edgewood High School, where he graduated in 1971. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Navy, serving honorably from 1971 to 1974, including time spent as a Vietnam Vet.

Following his military service, Rich pursued a career as a professional artist, a vocation that allowed him to express his deep appreciation for beauty in both conventional and unexpected places. His hobbies of painting and gardening further showcased his artistic spirit and love for vibrant colors and life. He had a great love of music, especially jazz, and was a talented musician. In his last month in the hospital, his jazz music was on continuously, day and night.

Rich is survived by his sisters, Kathleen Greffly (Jim) and Melissa Cressman (Kelly), his brother, Brian Copeland, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom will miss his creative spirit and gentle presence.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Destiny Funeral Home in Long Beach, CA, is assisting with arrangements. Rich's life was one of vibrant creativity and dedicated service, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.

A much loved and enjoyed painting of his. My family named it "The Hobbit". And here´s Rich entertaining at one of my many small parties in Dana Point where he was my very first tenant in my duplex in Dana Point. He was a great tenant and took excellent care of it. Quickly became a best friend.

At my wedding party in my Dana Point duplex on Violet Lantern. He´s the one in the white sweater. He was an unforgettable friend; an old soul. He often played his guitar at small parties here. And I have 2 of his beautiful paintings my whole family enjoys. We named one The Hobbit. Another is a whale painting. Rest in peace my old friend

My wife and I met Richard on the Southwest Chief Amtrak line from Chicago to LA in the summer of 2014. He was in the sleeper across from us and fortunately our friendship continued until his passing. It was an honor and a pleasure to get to know him and he will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of helping to care for Richard in his final months. When I had some free time, we would talk and share stories and discuss our mutual love for art. He was an extremely talented, sweet, funny man. He shared his portfolio with me and other members of the healthcare team and I was blown away by his amazing artistic talent. He had a copy made of his self portrait and signed it for me; I will always treasure that picture and the conversations we had. He will forever be missed. To his family and friends: I am so sorry for your loss.
