Richard "Dick" Uchimura Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2025.
Richard "Dick" Yoshiharu Uchimura, 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at home in El Cajon on Friday, August 8. Born in Garden Grove, California, Dick attended Fallbrook High School before earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carole, with whom he shared a lifetime of devotion, partnership, and joy.

It is with great love and gratitude that we remember his life. A respected and compassionate veterinarian, Dick dedicated over 40 years to caring for animals in El Cajon, California. Together, he and Carole owned and operated Jamacha Veterinary Clinic, often making personal sacrifices to be available to patients and clients around the clock. Known for his gentle way with animals and his honesty with their owners, Dick earned the trust and affection of all who came through his clinic's doors. Even after retirement, he continued to donate his time and expertise to animals in need, reflecting his lifelong generosity.

Outside of his work, Dick lived life fully. He loved good food, cultural outings with Carole, golfing with friends, gardening, hiking, baking pies, and traveling. His favorite golf courses were Palm Desert, Monterey, and Lake Tahoe. Some of his favorite travel destinations included Lake Tahoe and San Francisco, where he and Carole went three times a year, for many years, to enjoy golf, theater, museums, and good food. They also adventured to New York, Las Vegas, and Zion National Park, where they often spent Thanksgiving with family, hiking and golfing along the way. A skilled golfer, Dick's office was filled with plaques and trophies celebrating his many achievements, including 7 hole-in-ones, as well as local tournament victories.

For Dick, family was everything. As a proud Japanese American who lived through the challenges of internment during World War II, he understood the strength and resilience that family can bring. Among his four sisters and one brother, and throughout his extended family, he was a constant source of care and encouragement. He honored his heritage, valued every connection, and made it his quiet mission to look out for those he loved.

Whatever Dick did, he did with heart - whether it was perfecting his golf swing, discovering the best apple pie recipe, or showing up for someone who needed him. He was the best at so many things, but above all, he was the best at being a devoted husband, a loving uncle, and a true friend. We will remember him for his kindness, his dedication, his humor, and the difference he made in our lives. His love and his legacy will stay with us always.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to an animal welfare organization of your choice, honoring Dick's compassion for animals.

Our sympathy to the family! We were not personal friends but brought our pets to the clinic when he was first sharing space with another Vet. When we brought our dog in he was seen by the other man first and he told me what it would cost to remove the lump etc. It was more than I thought we could afford so I said I need to go home and speak to my husband. We had five children at the time and they needed shoes and other clothes because school was going to start in a week. We reluctantly decided to have "Pal" put down. When I went back to the clinic I was shown in to see Dr. U. He looked the situation over and said, we don't need to send the lump in to be biopsied. If it is cancer it will come back but otherwise he will be fine. Can you afford $30? Of course we can. Our kids were so happy that one told me to make some cookies for Dr. U.
Pal was fine after that. We never went to another Vet until after Dr. U retired and we had no choice. He was truly kind and compassionate... We were sorry that he had to retire but I understand because I am now 85 as well.

Dick was my best friend .We did everything together from playing football going off to college together. We live together for two years before he left to pursue his veterinarian degree at Davis University, and I went onto Loyola University to get my bachelors in business.
Dick was the influence in my life that made me want to be a better person. He was always happy, had a smile on his face and only thought about the positive aspects of life!
He was more than a friend, I will never forget him.May He rest in Peace!

Dr U. Was one of the finest people I have ever known in my lifetime. I had the privilege of working with him as a veterinarian assistant for many years , alongside Val and Nancy. His caring and compassion for people and their animals went beyond what anyone expected , because that's the way he was. I'm sure he had lots of "friends" to greet him when he arrived at his destination. I send love and hugs and caring for Carole and family and friends

I worked with Dr U back in the early 70s he was the most kind man I ever knew. There was a day I was helping him with a dog that we removed a wort off his head while he was finishing up he looked at me young lady you better stick your head outside and take some fresh air before you pass out guess I looked alittle pale. Never forgot it

I started working for Dr. U when I was 18 and continued for 20 years. He was very influential as to the person I am today! I will always be grateful to him and Carole. He became a Father figure to me. I will miss him terribly. Love you lots, Valerie.
