Richard (Dick) Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2024.
August 20, 1937 - April 24, 2024

On April 24, 2024, Richard Laurence Weaver (Dick) passed away peacefully in his home in Ocean Pines, Maryland due to natural causes. Dick was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Chester and Grace Weaver. The family moved to South Portland, Maine when Dick was a young boy. As a teenager, he and his parents moved to Alexandria VA, where he later joined the Air Force.

He lived in North Africa, while serving in the Air Force. He served for two years in Tripoli and Morocco. He began training as a data processing specialist in Germany and later in Ohio. This data processing training led to him being hired by GEICO as their first Systems Analyst.

During his early years at GEICO he met the love of his life, Frances Kress Weaver. Fran and Dick were married 62 years. They raised their three sons in Rockville, Maryland. Dick and Fran retired to Ocean Pines, MD in 1998.

As an employee at GEICO, he met several coworkers who had a mutual passion for fishing. Through this passion, they created a group called the "Pondhoppers". The Pondhopper's friendships evolved to memorable, annual gatherings with fishing trips to Maryland and Delaware ponds. These special weekends included Crab Night, Steak Night, Saturday night Fish Fry and lots of pranks and shenanigans! The "Founding Pondhoppers" brought in their sons and new friends to include almost 20 official members. These members continue the fishing traditions and events to this day. Dick was the last of the "founding" members and he will be missed by all.

Dick also enjoyed season tickets to Redskins games at RFK, hiking the C&O Canal, bird watching, vacationing in Maine (Lake Cobbossee) and camping on Assateague Island. Most notably, he was a Gold Medal winning Senior Olympian in swimming.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Frann, sons Joel (wife Ruth), Rich (special friend Brenda) and Jim (wife Minda). He was a loving grandfather to Libby (husband Max), Jay, Ian, and Emily. He is also survived by nephew Eric Cornetta, niece Joyce Barnhard, brother-in-law, Joseph Kress (partner Robert Ranahan) and special "son" Tom Atwell (wife Terri).

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Barbara (Babs) Eldering.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salisbury.

My thought are with you and the boys wishing you comfort and solace at this time. Uncle Dick was a good man. He came from a good family and created a good family.

He loved jazz music, sports and his Sweetie Fran. Dick always had a smile and a glimmer in his eyes.
