Richard Dyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2012.
Richard L. Dyer, 77

Brunswick – Richard Lewis Dyer, 77, of Chebeague Island passed from this life to the next on Friday August 10, 2012 after a brief illness at Mid-Coast Hospital. He was born on Chebeague Island in August 27, 1934, a son of Fannie E. (Gott) and Capt. Manley A. Dyer. He attended Chebeague Island schools.

In his younger years Richard was a member of the Chebeague Island Baseball Team. He was a lifelong lobsterman, worked with his father as a purse seiner, and worked on the mainland as a sales rep for Week's Dairy and in maintenance for Maine National Bank in Portland.

Richard truly enjoyed fishing, spending a good part of November hunting "upta" camp Downeast in Waite at Dyer Den, playing cards, socializing with friends and a diehard Red Sox fan. He was a real Maine character who knew how to spin a yarn and tell a story and it took a discerning ear to know what was what. He will be remembered for enjoying the simple life, answering the phone, "How do?" and was a loving grandfather.

Richard is survived by his daughter Cindy Godin and her husband Larry of Sabattus; his daughter Terry York and her husband Gerry of Orr's Island; his grandchildren: Heidi Pomerleau of Bowdoin, Corey Godin of Lewiston, Kayla Krech of West Bath, Bryan York of Orr's Island; his great-granddaughter Cali Pomerleau; his brother Douglas Dyer and his wife Marjorie of Cousin's Island and his first wife, Suzanne Jackson of Chebeague Island. He was predeceased by his second wife of 33 years Margaret "Peggy" Dyer (2008).

A funeral service will held on Wednesday August 15 at 12:45 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth with Pastor Katherine Russo officiating. Burial will follow in Chebeague Island Cemetery and a reception with refreshments in his honor will be held at the Chebeague Inn after the burial.

We just learned of Dickie's passing. We are so sorry to hear about this. He was a wonderful man! He was the Betsy man at our wedding. We often mentioned the day we went out on the boat with him. Our daughter was only a few months old. We strapped her into her little car seat, put her in the bait box and fished for the day! What memories!

Our deepest expression of sympathy for Terry, Cindy and families. Gene and I were privileged to know Peggy and Richard for over 40 years. We visited them each summer on their beloved island, Chebeague, and so enjoyed this time with them. Richard was a special person. He had an infectious smile and warm heart and enjoyed sharing "his island" with us. Gene and Richard loved to fish and spent many days each summer doing that together. We had many wonderful lobster dinners together as Richard caught and cooked lobsters for us. I could go on and on as we have such wonderful memories and a very special place for Richard in our hearts. We will miss him so much.

I was honored to meet Mr Dyer through his daughter, Cindy. She talked a great deal about him and I feel I knew him very well. He was quite the character with a warm personality and easy to talk to. He left behind a beautiful family whom I have gotten very close to since having Cindy as a dear friend. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Dyer's family and friends. May God bless each of you and hold you close during this difficult time.

We were very fortunate to have met Richard and Peggy many years ago on a trip up to the island. We have visited every year since and thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with them both. The last few years without Peggy were still fun, but we missed her. We have enjoyed visiting with Richard just a few weeks ago. He was putting up speed limit signs on his road the last time we saw him. We will miss the wicked good times we always had. Our condolences go out the whole family. I was priviledged to know Dick and Peggy as their physical therapist. They were both wonderful people and will be dearly missed. One of my fondest memories was making sure he could get to his lobster boat safely. So, he brought me out in his dinghy with a hole the size of a half dollar in it! He said that it had been there longer than I was alive and it hadn't sunk yet! We made it to his lobster boat and did it safely! I had never been on a lobster boat and thoroughly enjoyed the ride around Chebeque. My condolenses to his family. Lisa StPierre (Yarmouth, ME)

I was priviledged to know Dick for a few years, not nearly enough. He welcomed me to Chebeague with his wonderful smile. I loved sitting with him and listening to him tell stories and especially stories about his beloved wife that he lost a few years ago. There was just something about him that made people want to be around him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
