Richard Erwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2024.
Richard "Bama" Easton Erwin passed away on July 13, 2022, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 79. He was born on March 23, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama. Richard, known to many as "Bama," had an illustrious and adventurous career as an offshore mechanical engineer at Amoco Oil, dedicating over 30 years to his work in the U.S. & internationally.

The joy of his life was his beautiful wife, Paula, who he married in 1971. They had many wonderful years together until she passed away in 1999. He felt blessed to have her in his life as long as he did, especially since he almost did not get a second date when he cooked her "squirrel" on the first date. She said, "thanks but no" and decided on steak instead. I guess he wanted the date to be memorable. They ended up dating and the rest is history. He was a wonderful dad to his two daughters, helping with homework, carting around to sporting events and playing countless practical jokes.

His other great love was University of Alabama football. Roll Tide Roll! He wore an Alabama shirt every day and introduced himself as "Bama." He even named his much-loved dog, Ali, to honor Alabama football. He loved to tell the story of how he played football with Joe Namath. Not being completely truthful that "playing football" meant that one day walking across campus Joe Namath threw him the ball in a quick pick-up game on campus. He loved to taunt his friends who supported other football teams and won (and lost) many bets over the years.

In addition, he loved spending time with friends and family, reading, swimming laps, wood working, painting and drawing, walking, and riding his bike.

Richard is survived by his loving daughters, Laurie Erwin and Christi Young, as well as his son-in-law John Young, grandsons J.C. Young and Blake Young, and his brother William Rector Erwin, Jr. and sister-in-law Catherine Blue. He was preceded in death by Paula Roberts Erwin, and his parents Mary Louise Erwin, and William Rector Erwin.

Richard's educational journey included attending Tarrant City Elementary, Tarrant City High School, and the University of Alabama.

His final resting place is at Klein Funeral Park located at 9714 FM 2920 Tomball, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Richard's memory. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
