Richard Hackett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 23, 2011.
August 12, 1932 February 19, 2011 Richard "Dick" Hackett passed away peacefully at his hom e on Howe Creek on February 19, 2011. Dick was born in Ferndale, CA, and grew up on the family ranch on Howe Creek. He attended Price Creek School, a one-room elementary school with 18 students, and graduated from Ferndale High in 1951. After obtaining a degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he married his high-school sweetheart, LaVerne Chandler, in 1953. Dick initially worked for Pacific Lumber Co. before starting a career in real estate appraisal for Bank of America, specializing in agriculture and timber, working throughout northern California, as well as on special assignments as a timber specialist throughout the western states and Central America. After retirement from Bank of America in 1988 he established a private appraisal service specializing in agricultural and timber lands, and later worked in partnership with his son Mark. In 1970 Dick and his wife LaVerne purchased the Hackett Ranch from his father and uncle and continued its operation as a sheep and cattle ranch. In 1984 his son Steve joined him in operating the ranch, which has been expanded over the years since to include adjoining and valley bottom land. A lifelong and avid hunter and fisherman, Dick enjoyed hunting for deer, elk, and wildfowl throughout his life, and passed that love along to his sons and grandchildren. He continued a family tradition of seasonal salmon fishing and abalone gathering at Shelter Cove, where he and LaVerne had a second home and hosted many friends and family gatherings there. Dick was deeply involved in his community and ranching and timber industries throughout his life. He served for 8 years on the Ferndale Union High School Board. He was a long-time member of Ferndale Rotary Club and a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He was on the Boards of Directors of the Humboldt County and California Farm Bureau and Humboldt County and California Wool Growers Association, including President of the Humboldt chapters. He was President of the California Wool Growers Association 1992 -1994, and Second Vice President of the California Farm Bureau in 1989. He also worked on many special commissions and projects related to the ranching and timber industries. In 1991 the California Wool Growers Association named him California Sheepman of the Year, and he was selected by the Ingomar club as 1997 Cattleman of the Year. His greatest love was for his family and he instilled in them his respect for the land, responsibility for his community, and love of active living. His greatest pleasures in later life were his grandchildren, whom he taught to hunt and fish and whose sports activities he and his wife followed closely. Dick is survived by his wife LaVerne, daughter Lynn and husband Raymond Gorman of Prather, CA; son Steve Hackett and wife Jill of Ferndale, daughter-in-law Crystal Hackett of Live Oak, CA; sister Barbara Lowrey and husband Ron; grandchildren Scott Davis and wife Julie, Shawna Smith and husband Steve, Conner Hackett, Joseph Hackett, Tanner Hackett, Markus Hackett, and great grandchildren Abigail and Cassidy Davis, and Samantha Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Wilma, and son Mark. A visitation for Dick will be held at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary on Thursday, February 24, 2011 from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. His funeral service will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Ferndale at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 25, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting remembrances be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or Hospice of Humboldt, members of which helped ease Dick's last days, or to the charity of your choice. LaVerne and family, I am so sorry to learn of Dick's passing. We were out of the country at the time of his death. I enjoyed working with Dick during his time at B of A, and then when he did appraisals for Humboldt Bank. He will be solely missed by his family, friends and the community. My best to all of you, Martha Traphagen

Dear Laverne and Family,

Dick was a great guy, friend, and mentor to me in our appraisal days. We had some great (and some not so great) adventures while working together.

We will miss him.

Dear LaVerne and family,
Dixie and I were sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He was a great person and well liked by all who knew him and it was my good fortune to have an opportunity to work with him. He had excellent Appraisal skills while maintaining a high standard of professionalism. It was a pleasure to also work with him on the BofA sponsored California Livestock Symposium in the 1970's and early 1980's.
Dick will not only be missed by his family, but also by all who know and worked with him. Dixie and I send our very best to you, LaVerne, and we want you to know that we also share in your loss.
Our very best wishes and prayers are with you and your family

Dick was a great friend to me and my wife, Tal during our assignment in Eureka. He did a lot of appraisals for me while at Henderson Center branch and, as a result, enabled many real estate loans. Haven't seen Dick for a good many years, but he will certainly won't be forgotten. My prayers are with him.

Dear LaVerne and Family:
I can't begin to list the wonderful memories I have because of Dick. The salmon, abalone, and perch fishing trips to Shelter Cove, the cider making adventures and poison oak burning episodes at the Howe Creek Ranch. They were all wonderful childhood experiences made possible because of the bond between your family and mine. Dick was always at the center of every adventure. He was an important figure in my life and he will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I worked with Dick as his secretary in the appraisal department in Eureka, and could not have had a finer boss. What a wonderful example he was in his love for his family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Laverne and the rest of the Hackett family...

Dear Hackett Family: I am so sorry about your loss. I have enjoyed meeting Dick on several occasions associated with my work with Steve. I always felt welcomed by Dick, and the entire family. I particularly remember Dick's generosity when I was included in family dinners on a couple of occasions. He always was smiling and positive, something I see passed on to his family. He was blessed to live where he did and to have such a family. My thoughts are with you all.

Grandpa, words can not express the feelings I'm having at this time. I will never forget and will always cherish the times we spent together and things you taught me. Whether it was coming to the ranch to visit, work over vacation or to go buck hunting, I loved every minute and the stay was always to short. Some of my best and fondest memories would never have happened without you,Grandma & The Hackett Family.

Dick, you were a great co-worker. You managed the Eureka Appraisal office professionally and competently. And what a hunter!! We had many great hunting expeditions both on your ranch and in places like Colorado, Idaho and New Mexico, just to name a few. The world is a better place because you were here.

The Hackett Family,

Dick was somebody I looked up to since I met him, in fact I shot my first deer with Dicks help. Professionally I referred to him quite often. He was a True Gentleman and will be missed.

LaVerne & Family

Dick was a fun guy to fish with with, I only hoped that we lived closer together so we could have done more of it.
Our last fishing trip was at Shelter Cove, that is the night Dick got the call from his doctor about his
prostate cancer. Dick never let his cancer get him down and enjoyed many more years including his
50th wedding anniversary in 2003, which Marian and I had the privilege to attend.

Life goes by so fast and we all become so busy that we never got as much time as we would have
liked to be with our friends. Now we must enjoy the wonderful memories that we have of our past life.

Lydia and I are sorry to hear this news. Dick was always kind to us and interested in what we and our children were doing. He once did an appraisal for us on Easter morning to help us with a loan. I am sure this is difficult but please know that he made an impact and will be missed.
