Richard Held

Richard Edward Held, a son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a dear friend, passed away at the age of 72 on January 15, 2025.

Born on May 10, 1952, in San Francisco to Ernest and Doris Held (née Steele), Rich was the eldest of three children. He grew up in Tiburon and spent his life living and working in Marin County, where he remained deeply connected to the area's culture, values, and landscape.

Though formally named Richard, his family and close childhood friends knew him as Dick. Others knew him as Rich, a later-in-life nickname that suited his relaxed and approachable nature. No matter how he was called, Rich always brought his genuine self to every connection he made.

Rich was passionate about motorcycles and could often be found cruising the scenic roads of Northern California on his Harley Davidson - his favorite routes winding through Mt. Tam and along the coast. His love for the open road extended to all forms of adventure, from camping with friends, fishing various bodies of water, to taking long, leisurely bike rides in Marin County. In his younger years, Rich was an experienced abalone diver where he would spend weekends on his zodiac out on the coasts of Sonoma and Mendocino. Overall, Rich took joy in learning new skills, experimenting with technology, and tinkering with tools and gadgets in his spare time. These passions reflect his appreciation for nature and the simple joys of life.

Rich dedicated 32 years of his career to Safeway, where he worked as a skilled butcher before he retired in 2006.

Predeceased by his father, Ernest (Bill) Held, who passed away in 1995, Rich leaves behind his adoring mother, Doris Held (née Steele), his two daughters, Kristin Held (Rex) and Kelly Shell (Anthony), his brother and sister, James Held and Bonnie Springfield, four grandchildren, over 20 nieces and nephews, and numerous childhood friends.

Richard will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends in the Spring.
