Overland Park, Kansas - Richard "Dick" Erwin Hoffman, 82, of Overland Park, KS passed away Thursday, November 19, 2020, at St Luke's Hospital. An only child, Dick was born May 22, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Missouri. Dick served a career in Engineering for decades, primarily at the Puritan-Bennett Corporation, where his hard work led to him being the credited inventor of the medical gas alarm system. Dick was a member of numerous committees and panels throughout his career, including the Food and Drug Administration, National Fire Protection Association, and American Society of Testing Materials, and founded his own consulting company. He enjoyed fishing, reading, and playing the many harmonicas he owned. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Kathleen "Kay" Hoffman, and his parents Erwin and Edna Hoffman. He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Wasinger, and husband Carl, and Kathleen Brennan, and husband Kevin; seven grandchildren, Katie, Karla, Robert, Anne Marie, Patrick, Ryan and Maggie.

Dick and I had both a personal and professional relationship spanning more than 50 years. Introduced by a mutual friend ( Eddie Fuchs), I was hired by Dick, then director of the Medical Engineering Department, as a technical writer for the next twenty years. It wasn't long before, under his guidance, that I began contributing to the development and enhancement of a wide variety of medical products. With his encouragement, I went on to complete my MBA and M.D. degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kansas.

After retiring Dick began his own business (auditing Medical Gas Delivery Systems for hospitals) and invited me to participate in this venture. For many years we audited the Medical Gas Systems at the many facilities operated by the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Our relationship had a close personal side as well, our love of shooting with our friend Eddie and many hours of chatting over our other common interests, reflecting on our years at Puritan-Bennett, frequent luncheon events, news of our families and their progress in life, and of course, some political views exchanged. We emerged from our professional association to a much rewarding personal friendship. As we both had similar life experiences, values, and faith beliefs. In the last two years we sat next to each other for worship at Bethany Lutheran Church and would talk briefly on our way out of the sanctuary. Dick had a profound effect on my life and provided some defining moments for me. He was a devoted friend, husband, father, and grandfather who took pride in the achievements of those around him, many of which he helped to encourage and orchestrate.

He will be missed but mostly not forgotten.

My most sincere condolences to the family and my thanks for sharing him with me.

Dick and I had a friendship that extended back to a time prior to the time he and Kay were married. We both worked at Puritan and later were neighbors in Overland Park. Our daughters shared time together too. Our family always felt so very welcome at the Hoffman's.

I worked with Dick at Puritan Bennett and always enjoyed his company, especially his humor. I am so sorry to learn of his death. Please accept my deepest condolences.
