Richard Joy Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
The world has lost a truly great, compassionate man. One of the good guys! Dick was a one of a kind classic! "Everybody loved Dick." Dick was taken from us suddenly and unexpectedly on January 8, 2018.

Dick was born in Los Angeles, California, to Van Feagans Joy and Mildred Robertson Joy, AKA "Binx."

He started his working life as a L.A. County ocean Lifeguard, working in the city of Malibu. Zuma beach was his spot. Tower 5. While lifeguarding there he met the love of his life, De Anne, when he rescued her from a shark! The rest is history. This fun love story has been told many times over the 61 wonderful years they were married, and it still inspires. They shared a beautiful life and raised an amazing family.

After his marriage, Dick joined his father's insurance business, Van F. Joy and Company. After years in the insurance business, he left to start his own fire protection company, Chem Cal, in Los Angeles.

After retiring from Chem Cal, he joined his son, Rick, in his fire protection company, Joy Equipment Company, in Carpentaria, California. He loved working with his son!!

Dick and De Anne raised their two children, Natalie and Rick, in Temple City, and Arcadia, California. Everyone wanted to be part of the Joy family. Dick and De Anne made everyone feel welcome as if they were part of the happy Joy family.

The couple eventually moved back to the beach, first to Malibu, living there for 20 plus years. They wanted to be closer to family and in 2016 moved to Oxnard Shores.

Dick knew how fortunate he was to enjoy his retired years by the sea with the love of his life, and enjoying so many adventures with his large family.

Family came first with Dick, and he treasured every minute spent having family fun.

He had a unique bond with each of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The most fun, loving, genuinely goofy "Grampy," he has left amazing memories which will be cherished forever.

Dick will be hugely missed by all who knew him, but most of all of course by his wife, De Anne; and the beautiful family they built.

Dick believed that the meaning of life is to Live It. No greater example of a life well lived, is Dick's own life.

Dick brought sunshine to everyone's world. He had no shortage of friends, and made new ones everywhere he went. With his contagious smile, he touched the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him.

He was a loving and devoted Husband, amazing father; very, very, very special grampy and great grampy, father In-Law, uncle, great uncle, and cousin. Dick served as an inspiring god father and mentor to many as well.

He Is survived by his loving Wife, De Anne Joy; Daughter, Natalie Joy Siman; Son, Rick Van Joy; Daughter In-Law, Christy Lynn Joy; Daughter In-Law, Mallory Joy; Son In-Law, John O'Connell Siman; Son In-Law, Tyler Martin Anderson; Grandchildren, Austin Joy Anderson, Van Gardner Joy, Scotty O'Connell Siman, Spencer Andrew Joy, and Mari De Anne Siman; Great Grandchildren, Piper Joy Anderson, And Canon Martin Anderson.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018, 11:00 A.M., at the Malibu Presbyterian Church, 3324 Malibu Canyon Road, Malibu, CA 90265.

Dick was so genuine and so kind. He was of help any time he had the opportunity. Please in Dick's honor and in Lieu of flowers, reach out and help someone in need and tell them this is from your friend, Dick! Make someone smile. In addition if you choose to help the Thomas fire and Flood victims that would have been his choice as well.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.

Sorry for you and your family's loss. Although I never knew Dick personally, I did have the good fortune to work with him over the phone occasionally as we conducted platform business. R.I.P.
Y'all take care of each other.

The greatest legacy of a life well lived is the love that is passed on. I never met you in person but I heard the love that you daughter Natalie had for you. We would all be lucky to have that kind of love in our lives.
