RICHARD LANE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 24 to Jan. 31, 2021.
LANE, Richard Stone Beloved Father, Husband, Friend and Physician. Dr. Richard S. Lane passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on January 22, 2021 at the age of 73, after many years of struggle with Parkinson's disease. He will be missed by his wife Zarita, and three daughters, Liana, Carina and Cassia, as well as his sister, nieces, nephews and countless friends and family. Rick graduated from Rush Medical School in Chicago and was in practice in the Boston area for 40 years in Primary and Palliative care at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Rick was a talented physician whose natural sense of empathy and kindness allowed him to connect with his patients, friends and family. A former colleague of Rick's described him as a "spiritual and loving, loving, person." All who met Rick came away with a deep sense of calm, safety, and a laugh. Rick was a lifelong student, mentor and teacher. He collaborated with his wife to train medical interpreters across the country. Rick wore many hats in his life, including that of a musician, serenading his children with their own personalized songs, all ending in "coo coo cachoo," achieving a black belt in Aikido, and skiing every chance he got. Rick's natural sense of humor was a beacon in the storms of life, guiding and comforting all who knew him. For a man of great passion and intelligence, he had a self proclaimed "terrible" taste in movies and books, which he lovingly passed on to his daughters, nieces and nephews. Rick believed in the healing power of storytelling, demonstrated by his everyday love poems left on sticky notes around the house for his wife and daughters to find and his love of science fiction. Although Rick's culinary expertise culminated in "nuking eggs" in the microwave, he loved to share meals, stories, and solve world problems over the dinner table enjoying meals expertly prepared by Zarita. Rick was an extraordinary builder of bridges, connecting with close friends and family across the United States, Portugal, and Mexico. He mastered languages with an unrivaled respect and finesse that impressed all. In his last days, he reminded his grieving children and wife that "a little bit of love goes a long way," as he sang songs like Amazing Grace and You Are My Sunshine with his characteristic joie de vivre. Services will be private. To send condolences, please email [email protected] In lieu of flowers, and to bring to life Rick's hopes for the future, please donate to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), or Essential Partners. To honor Rick Lane's memory, please spend time with your loved ones, find beauty in the everyday, and strive to be courageously curious in your pursuit to understand the people in your life.

Dear Zarita, Liana, Carina and Cassia,
Nancy and I just came upon the very sad news of Rick's untimely passing nearly four years after the fact. We have thought of you all very warmly over the years. Recalling family times and dinners together when the kids (ours, Miles and Haley) were growing up. Rick was a wonderful being with a unique energy and perspective, such a loving heart and way. It was great to connect with him during an exciting time at HCHP and even have him as my doctor for a year. Also to experience your beautiful and creative partnership and fun family dynamic. Sending our love and hearts out to you all!
Larry, Nancy, Miles and Hal.ey

I was saddened to read the news of the passing of my old neighbor who became my friend. Rick lived above me and my wife Nancy in a small two family in Somerville in the mid 1980’s . Rick used to come down and share a meal or sometime play guitar with Nancy, Me and my friends. He was a kind and interesting person with a good sense of humor. I will have always have fond memories of the short time we had spent together.

My deepest condolences to Zarita and his family.

It was always a pleasure to be around Rick when he came to teach or collaborate on various ongoing projects. He shared his knowledge with such a kind and humble spirit, not to mention his great sense of humor and everyone looked forward to his classes. He was a very good man who loved his wife and family dearly.
He will always be fondly remembered, Esther Phillips

I remember Rich as a very nice guy, who pass tranquility and happiness to people around him. I did not get to know him very well, but I am sure he will be missed by Zarita, their daughters, and everyone who was lucky enough to know him closely. My sentiments to the family and friends who are certainly hurting right now. He will be with you forever through the nice memories and lessons left by him, try to remember this.
