Richard Palmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2013.
Dr. Richard V. Palmer was born April 16, 1938 in Des Moines, IA, to Milburn and Alice Palmer. He was a very conscientious person from childhood. People who knew Richard understood that if he was given a job, he would get it done yesterday. As a teenager, he worked various jobs from mowing lawns and delivering newspapers to working in an ice house and lifeguarding. He played trumpet in the high school band and was part of a dance band, as well. After attending Grinnell and Drake Universities, he graduated from University of Iowa to become a third generation dentist. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Richard served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era on Okinawa before marrying Sally Schafer Hobi in December of 1963. They spent most of their married life In Longview, Washington where Richard practiced dentistry. As an active member of the community, he served as President of the Pioneer Lion's Club, was a member of the Lower Columbia Amateur Radio Club, served on the National Bank Board, and was also a committed member of Calvary Community Church where he served as the Administrator.

After retiring from dentistry, Richard felt the Lord's call to ministry. He and Sally lived and served the Lord in Santa Barbara, CA, and Lake Oswego, OR before moving to Vancouver, WA where he helped lead pastor's prayer summits through International Renewal Ministries, and served as Secretary of the Board of Multnomah University and Bible College. He was an active member of Glenwood Community Church.

Richard moved to Texas in 2011 where he and Sally immediately became involved in their community, Heritage Ranch and Hunters Glen Baptist Church. Richard loved electric trains, boating, and old cars, mostly Corvettes. He held an Amateur Extra radio operator license and through this hobby had friends all over the world. Not only did he love summers on Hood Canal, and vacations in Hawaii, but enjoyed travel to other parts of the world, especially Israel. Richard's first love was Jesus, and he lived his life in pursuit of sharing the Good News of eternal life with Christ to those in his circle of influence.
He is survived by his wife, Sally, son, Rick Palmer and wife Laura, daughter Sara Grode and husband Dennis, grandchildren Brett and Jessica Palmer and Caleb and Sadie Grode, brother Curt Palmer and much extended family. Services are Tuesday, January 22 at 2:00 pm at Hunters Glen Baptist church in Plano, TX. Dr. Palmer will be buried at the DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baylor Healthcare System Foundation for Cancer Research, International Renewal Ministries, New Century Hospice of Dallas, or Hunters Glen Baptist Church Local Missions.

Sally and Family-Richard was one of those rare people who really knew how to listen. He treasured relationships and alway made a positive contribution to my life every time we spoke. He always was quick to laugh and I loved how he had nick names for people, like 'Tiger' for my son Nathan. Most of all Richard loved the Lord and was not shy about sharing his faith. I treasured our friendship and know his legacy lives on a little in each of us.

Dear Sally, We were so honored that our paths crossed in ministry and friendship. I always felt, after attending several Pastor's Prayer Summits, that when you both were in our church service that lots of prayers were going up to our lord to bring fruit from the preaching to His word! I do check for your car in Union when I drive past (especially that yellow one:)! And I will never forget your daughter Sara's "recommendation" of you both for our church family! And Rick's messy car repairs to keep my old beaters going. He was always so patient and generous and caring. Love forever! Jack & Betsy

Jane and I send our love and sympathy to you and your family. I have such fond memories of times spent with Dick in prayer summits and appreciate his passion for prayer and ministry to pastors. Jane is doing fairly well, but dependent upon me for her care. We both will be praying for you, Sally. May the Lord will you with His presence and love.

Dear Sally and family:
Though we did not know Dick well but met him through our PEO gatherings, he became very special to us, a very precious man of God. We knew of his commitment to his Lord and Savior. His servanthood while on earth set a tremendous example for all. We look forward to celebrating heaven with Dick. Our love and our prayers are with you all.

Richard was a friend and fine person whom I knew from kindergarten. He was always positive, and worked to make the world a better place. He fought an amazing battle against cancer and stayed upbeat until the end. Garland and Ellen DeNelsky

Dear Sally and family: our hearts grieve with yours at the loss you feel at this time. However, we also rejoice that Richard's pain and suffering is no longer a daily companion and he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. How often, as believers, do we talk about "finishing well?" Richard "finished well" - a man of integrity, faith and grace. May God give you a sense of His good pleasure in his servant Richard, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a special friend. May God grant to you a wonderful time on Tuesday as you remember this special life lived and shared with so many.
Our love,
Don & Connie Roth (Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada)

Sally, My thoughts are with you and your family. What a time of sadness this is now, but it will be great rejoicing when you meet again in heaven. It sounds like Richard knew and loved the Lord.
