Richard Pfluger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2025.
Palm City - Richard McAllister Pfluger, affectionately known as "Coach," died unexpectedly on February 22nd surrounded by his family. Rich lived a life that was a testament to his profound love for family and the joy of coaching and teaching. Born on March 17, 1959, Rich grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, and cherished summers by the sea in Lavallette, New Jersey.

A proud alumnus of Seton Hall Prep and Georgetown University, Rich began his career in Boston's mortgage industry. This experience served as a prelude to his true calling in education. His passion for the English language was equaled only by his enthusiasm for imparting that love to others. When Rich chose to leave the corporate world to teach, he embarked on a rich journey filled with inspiring young minds and shaping futures.

In 1996, a twist of fate brought him together with Holly, his beloved wife of 26 years, with whom he raised two wonderful sons, the lights of his life. By the early 2000s, Rich had found his place not only in the classroom but also on the sports field. His 2008 move to Palm City, Florida, allowed him to further expand his coaching influence, nurturing talent in baseball, football, golf, and girl's lacrosse. Rich taught and coached at many schools in Martin County, managed Palm Cove Golf Club, and most recently, contributed to the golf community he loved by working part-time at Sailfish Sands Golf Club.

For Rich, coaching was his passion. He found joy in every game, every practice, and every mentoring moment. His happiest times were spent cheering on his sons as they excelled in sports, giving him much pride and pleasure. Rich was an avid golfer and loved doing the New York Times crossword puzzle and beating everyone at trivia.

Rich leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment. He is survived by his wife, Holly Taylor Pfluger, his cherished sons, Edward Taylor Pfluger and Richard August Pfluger II, his daughter Kimberly, his mother, Maureen McAllister Pfluger, and his loving siblings and their families. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard August Pfluger, and his beautiful niece, Marielle Kathleen Bakri. Rich touched countless lives, not only as a coach and teacher but also as a friend and role model.

So sorry to hear about Rich's passing. As a resident of Palm Cove, I saw him almost a daily basis. My best memory was that I was struggling with my drives. He said follow me and we walked out onto the driving range. I think I hit three long ones down the middle and he looked at me and said you don't have a problem......He'll be missed, Rob Hoffman

Holly,

I just read of Rich's passing. I am so sorry for your loss! I have many fond memories of summers working alongside Rich at RGC. I learned from his passion and joy for teaching. It was years later Rich generously facilitated my wife and me getting married at Thorny Lea. You and your family are in my prayers!

God bless,

Coach Pfluger coached me in MCHS lacrosse. He loved his job, players, and the game! He always seemed to see so much potential in me as a player that no other coach could see. I know he always fought for me and was proud when I advanced in the sport we both loved! I hope he knows how much I appreciated his encouragement and support! Sending love and prayers during an incredibly hard time.

Coach Pfluger-or Pflugs, as most people called him-was more than just a lacrosse coach. He was a mentor, a leader, and a light in the lives of so many. His passion for lacrosse was undeniable, but even more powerful was the unwavering belief he had in our team. He didn´t just teach me the game; he taught me how to be a better teammate, a stronger competitor, and, most importantly, a better person. On and off the field, he always knew the right words to lift me up and push me forward-even when it meant pushing me to beat my mile time.

He made every practice a lesson in perseverance, every game an opportunity to grow, and every moment a chance to learn something valuable-not just about lacrosse, but about life. His words of encouragement, steady presence, and ability to see potential in others will never be forgotten.

Coach Pfluger leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and mentorship that will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We will carry his wisdom and kindness with us always.

Rest easy, Coach-you will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Thank you for everything, on and off the field.

Dearest Holly, Ed and Richie, Words are not enough -- Rich would know what to say with his beautiful understanding and use of the English language. He was a big part of my heart and I will miss him always. Of all the great things I could say about Rich, the top of my list is how much he loved all three of you. He was so proud to be your husband, Holly, and to be the dad of Ed and Richie, who have grown into remarkable young men. Well done, Rich. Love you forever, Lisa xoxo

Rich would love this poem. He was a wonderful man, greatly loved, with an enthusiasm for literature, nature, and all things we love but don´t always appreciate. - one of your biggest fans, Mary Ford

"I cannot speak, but I can listen.
"I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
"So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea,
"As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity
"Remember me."
(Margaret Mead)

Fittingly, a former Coach of mine many Moons ago preached to Us something I've carried with me and shared often, so spot-on regarding Coach Pfluger:
'Good, better, best,
Never, ever rest,
Until the good get better,
And the better get BEST.'
Rich was the Best.
May God Bless each and everyone of you, and RIP My friend.
