Richard Reed Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2018.
Richard W. Reed, age 74, passed away at his home in Columbus, Indiana last week. He was born in November 1943 to Shirley O. Reed and Inga (Eyer) Reed. Richard grew up in Carson, California and graduated from Banning High School in 1961. He played on the 1960 Championship team for the Banning Pilots and was also proud to have played in the 1961 Shrine All-Star Football Game. Richard went on to attend Oregon State University on a football scholarship.
In April 1964, he married Brenda Humphrey after they met at Oregon State. Together, they had two sons, Brian and Alan, who they raised in Walnut, California. Richard worked for Sears, Roebuck & Company for 28 years progressing from work on the sales floor, to department management, and eventually leadership roles in merchandise management, and a promotion to the Sears Tower in Chicago. In 1989, Richard and Brenda left Sears and Chicago to become entrepreneurs together. They opened successful stores selling Christmas gifts and decorations with locations in Bloomington, Columbus, and Edinburgh, and also Cincinnati, Ohio. Later, Rich and Brenda were also successful in the vending business and operated vending carts in 70 locations across 9 states
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Brenda; sons, Brian and Alan (Lisa); and grandchildren Katherine and Bradford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 21st at 2:30pm at Myers-Reed Chapel, 3729 25th Street, Columbus, Indiana. The family will greet friends on Saturday from 2:00pm until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children because the organization was supportive of Richard's love of football as well as instrumental to his son's recovery from a birth defect many years ago.
