Richard Ryan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2018.
Richard Ryan passed away on Sept 22nd after a brief battle with cancer. Born in San Mateo on May 16, 1930, his roots in the city ran deep. A graduate of St. Matthew's School and San Mateo High School (class of '48) as well as the College of San Mateo, he went on to serve in the San Mateo Police Department for 30 years. Richard's grandfather, Dr. Edwin Kehoe was born in Cincinnati and practiced for many years at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee before transferring to Fort Miley in San Francisco in 1928. His grandmother was a native of Escanaba, Michigan. His parents George and Mary (Kehoe) met at Marquette University and arrived in San Francisco in 1930 with 2 young children in tow. Richard was the first to be born in California. His uncle James Kehoe was the Postmaster of San Mateo for many years. In 1947, Richard joined the naval reserves, Treasure Island and volunteered for active duty in 1951, assigned to the 7th Fleet aboard the battleship USS Iowa. He was a proud member of the Korean Vets Association. Survived by his wife Barbara; daughters: Kathy Ryan of Foster City & Sheila Sundberg of Seattle; sister Patricia Duyanovich (Sacramento); brothers: Mike (Petaluma), George (Seattle) & Dennis (San Jose); grandchildren: Sean, Daniel, Ryan & Maya; and his beloved feline pals Seamus & Molly. Preceded in death by brothers Jim & Don. A special thanks to the staff at Snowline Hospice, especially Mary Lou, Megan, Charlene and Cindy. Private services will be held with interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma. Gifts in Richard's memory can be made to the Peninsula Humane Society.

Hi Barbara,
We first met Richard at Greg & Sheila's wedding. Sharing similar viewpoints on various subjects, he and I liked each other right away, although he was *just a bit* more conservative that I.

We will miss seeing him at those family events he (and you) could attend, especially Christmas.

Sgt. Ryan was my shift supervisor when I was the midnight records clerk in 1975. He was such a gentleman and always had a smile, good word and/or humorous quip. He will be missed.

Sgt Ryan was my Sergeant on a few shifts during my career. He always had our backs and he was a pleasure to work with. Prayers to Sgt Ryan's family. I will miss talking to him at the December luncheon. God bless.

Dick was my graveyard Sergeant when I joined SMPD in 1976. Being the first Lateral Officer, there were some bumps in the road which Dick helped me navigate. Dick was a true gentleman, always on a even keel at work and a pleasure to work for.
I looked forward to catching up with him at the annual lunch and will miss him this December. He was good man, a man of honor and a true friend. Of course it helped that he had Irish sense of humor during some difficult times.
I know he will be missed by many people, and by sharing his loss with them , I hope it eases the families sense of loss.
Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Dick, you were my hero and good friend. You were always there to help others when needed. It was great to see you every year at our retirees Christmas get together. I'm sadden with the news and pray for you and your family. God's speed! God bless you and your family. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed but not forgotten.

It was just last December, at the retirement luncheon that Dick and I talked and laughed about the years we worked together, mostly on the midnight shift. We had been promoted on the same day which now seems so long ago. I will always keep his memory alive as we truly enjoyed one an-others company. All those hours at work and of course at Bay Meadows solving all the problems of the world. To his family I can say that Dick was what they already know very well. A great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am proud to say that I knew him as one of San Mateo's finest and as a friend. May you rest in peace my brother.

To the entire Ryan family. I've been working at San Mateo Police Department since 1986, where I started as a Police Cadet (now in Records). I did know your loved one and he was a very nice man. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

i Loved Sgt. Ryan. He was always kind, and made be feel like I was part of the department. I thought of him every time I thought of the department. He told me of his cat Maggie when I saw the picture of her in the Times. I always looked for him at the reunions, and there he was still joking with me al he always did. I am sadden at his passing...I will miss him.

Dick was my sergeant at San Mateo Police Department, where I was a dispatcher. He was the patrol sergeant on graveyard when we worked together. What a great guy to have as my supervisor. He was not only a very good sergeant, he was fun, personable, and nonjudgmental. I have nothing but fond memories of him. God bless him and the Ryan family. With much love, Mary Kay Sholaas

He was such a nice man! A great supervisor of mine...I remember a bunch of us trying to quit smoking at the PD. He volunteered to hypnotize me to stop. It didn't work, but he was great about it! So sad...you are in our prayers..
