Richard Shelling Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register from Sep. 13 to Sep. 14, 2013.
SHELLING, DR. RICHARD Dr. Richard Shelling passed away on Sept. 12, 2013. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judi Hahn Shelling, his son, Douglas (Michelle) Shelling, daughters, Debbie (Tom) Reynolds and Susan (Eric) Lebersfeld, and his stepsons, Ken Hahn, Bill (Jessica Kerner) Hahn and Andy Hahn, and by his sister, Phyliss Lesser and many, many good and caring friends. He also leaves thousands of children, young people and adults whom he expertly and lovingly cared for as a Pediatrician in the New Haven area over the past fifty five years. Dr. Shelling was born on April 3rd, 1929, to Rose and Frank Shelling at Grace New Haven Hospital. He graduated from Hillhouse High School, The University of Connecticut and Boston University Medical School. He interned at Baltimore City Hospital (Johns Hopkins University) and finished his residency at Yale. In 1958, he started practicing with Robert Hamberger in Milford, Connecticut, and the following year formed Milford Pediatrics with Dr. Frank Gruskay. Dr. Shelling's area of expertise became children with emotional issues, as well as physical problems. In 1960, Dr. Al Solnit, the director of The Child Study Center at Yale, formed a group that became known as The Complete Pediatricians. Dr. Shelling was an original and integral part of this group. They met monthly for over 40 years seeking to deal with the whole child. Dr. Solnit became involved with Anna Freud, who headed a similar group in London. The New Haveners traveled to Anna Freud's clinic and home in England for a memorable visit. Dr. Shelling was Chief of Medicine at Milford Hospital in the late 50's and Associate Chief of Pediatrics. In the 60's, he began teaching fourth year Yale medical students through the Primary Care Curriculum. In later years, they came to his Milford office. He wanted to give them the opportunity to learn about normal child development, as well as imparting his medical knowledge. Other passions included golf, bicycling, exercising at the New Haven JCC, travel, food and spending time with his family and many friends. "It's been a good life" he said numerous times over the past difficult months. Funeral services at Cong. Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Rd., Hamden, MONDAY morning, Sept. 16, 2013 at 11:00 o'clock with Interment Services to follow at the Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Jewell St., New Haven. Memoriam Contributions may be sent to the Richard & Judith Hahn Shelling Education Fund, c/o The Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven, 360 Amity Rd., Woodbridge, CT 06525 or to Cong. Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Rd., Hamden, CT 06517. A strictly Private Period of Mourning will be observed. Funeral Arrangements in care of Robert E. Dr Shelling was a wonderful person and someone we could implicitly trust with the health of our children. Our children are near and at age 40 but when I look at them, I think of Dr Shelling and the role he played in molding them into healthy caring adults raising their families in his likeness.

Dr. Shelling was more than just a pediatrician to me and my sisters. He was a like a grandpa that we came to visit once a year. I loved going into his office and telling him all of my accomplishments in the past year just to see the smile on his face. His reaction was as if i was his grand child. He brightened up the doctor's office and touched our lives. He will be missed by me and my family.

There are few people on this earth who really stand out in life with virtues like compassion, sincerity, honesty, service above self, hard work and love for others outside of their own family. Dr. Shelling was one of those people. Thank you for caring for my children and for being an inspiration to all those lives you have touched. You will be missed by many and the love you have given will live on in all of us. God bless you and enjoy the peace and love of heaven until we we meet again.

I just heard and my heart skipped a beat. My girls (now 19 and 17) and I looked forward to their annual exam every year because Dr. was so, so, sweet and caring and thorough. He carved special uninterruped time just for us. My day is slightly off now upon hearing but appreciate Dr. was a special kind of angel for many people. Our sympathies.

Uncle Dick, for 15 years my husband, your nephew Peter Shelling Lesser has told me stories about you, your practice as a pediatrician, and his memories of you. Imagine my delight in getting to meet you, spend time with you and Judy! One of my best memories is you and Judy introducing me to a Maine Lobster! WoW! what fun! We also enjoyed sitting with you and celebrating Josh and Tonya's wedding the last time we were back east. You indeed lived a good life and made the most of it; you are truly an inspiration, Uncle Dick. With love for all who are left to remember you fondly may your memories and stories continue to warm our hearts, Eileen

Words can not express what a great man Dr. Shelling was. I had to go back in the hospital when my daughter was only two months old and my Aunt came to watch her and my son. Dr. Shelling gave me his home phone number in case my Aunt needed to get in touch with him. He was such a wonderful person and will be missed dearly.

My husband died at a very young age which left me with four children ages 4,6,9 and 10.I had no health insurance and when I came to Dr.Shelling with a sick child he not only treated my baby but told me never again would I pay for his services until I got back on my feet.We all know how many times I had to go back and take him up on his offer.I loved him like a Dad! We all are lucky to have known this amazing, loving, selfless man.The world is so much smaller without our beloved Dr. Shelling!

What a wonderful man!! You were a Godsend to me when my son was born 3 months premature. You always referred to him as a miracle child and I could'nt agree more. He is here today as a result of the care given by you and the docs at mlfd pediatrics. He is a happy healthy young man with a child of his own now and I thank God and you every day for the care he received. God bless you Richard Shelling! rest in peace..

We loved Doctor Shelling, he was the only Doctor my son would laugh and smile at as an infant, and we saw him up until just last year. Our hearts are sadden by his passing. He would often tell me stories of his grandchildren especially Zachary, being the same age as my son, and how much my son reminded him of Zach...All our love and prayers to his family. ??
