Richard Smith Obituary

Published by Sun on Jan. 27, 2008.
Richard Devon Smith, 78, departed this life on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, in Yuma. He was born on January 15, 1930, in Francesville, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Sylvia Smith; and sister, Paulina Smith. Richard retired at age 45 and loved spending summers in Winamac, Indiana, and wintering in Yuma. Winamac was home for many years to Richard and Clara Louise, his loving wife of 54 years. They owned and operated the Indian Head Restaurant in Winamac from 1964 to 1976 and owned the Indian Head Motel which they built in 1968. Richard loved to soar. He had his pilot's license since age 16 and flew his own plane for his and his family's pleasure. Fishing was also a passion, as he and Clara fished South Padre Island for 15 winters.

Richard is survived by wife, Clara Louise; sons, Mikel J. Smith (Jo Kyle), of Yuma, and Steven D. Smith, of London, England; three grandchildren, Lt. Kelly Jo Smith (Irven), of Baltimore, Maryland, Earl D. Smith (Jill), of Bel Air, Maryland, and Eric M. Smith of Franklin, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Magdalena Rose Smith, of Bel Air, Maryland; sisters, Arlene Gutwein (Adam), of Medaryville, Indiana, Phyllis Anderson (Don), of Granbury, Texas, Madeleine Gutwein (Fred), of Francesville, Indiana, and Diane Culp (James), of Francesville, Indiana; and brother, Ronald Smith of Lafayette, Indiana. His laughter and love for life will be missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be held Monday January 28, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with funeral services following at 2 p.m. Kammann Mortuary 795 W. 28th St., Yuma, Arizona.
