Richard Stoffel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2024.
Richard Lynn Stoffel, a dedicated friend to all who knew him, passed away on February 19, 2024, after a valiant battle with a prolonged illness. He was born on July 22, 1954, in Houston, Texas, to Albert Eugene and Marie Virginia Stoffel. Throughout his life, Richard exhibited resilience and determination, traits that defined his character.

As a youth, Richard rebelled against conformity, sporting long hair during his school days and ingeniously wearing a wig to comply with the school's dress code. Alongside his brother, he found solace and joy in surfing, a passion he carried into adulthood. Richard graduated from Brazoswood High School in Lake Jackson, Texas, setting the stage for his future endeavors.

Richard's professional journey began humbly at Gulf States in Freeport, Texas, where he started in the mailroom in 1973. Through hard work and dedication, he rose through the ranks to become an electrician's helper before eventually departing in 1986 to pursue opportunities in industrial construction across the nation. In 2004, he returned to Gulf States and eventually ascended to the role of president, a testament to his unwavering commitment and leadership.

A man of diverse interests, Richard found joy in live music, often tapping his toes and snapping his fingers to the rhythm. He cherished dancing, a passion he shared with his loved ones. An enthusiast of water skiing and golf, Richard also ardently supported his favorite sports teams, including the Houston Astros, Rockets, and Texans.

Renowned for his sharp intellect and mathematical prowess, Richard could effortlessly solve complex equations in his mind until the very end. He possessed a remarkable ability to build and repair anything.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Eugene and Marie Virginia Stoffel, his sister Virginia (Ginger) Gilliam, and his wife Pamela Stoffel. He is survived by his wife Gayle Landry, her daughters Laura Tracy and Sarah Spitser and their families, his son Christopher Stoffel, and his mother, Betsy Stoffel. He is also survived by his brothers Robert Stoffel and Gene Stoffel and his wife Carolyn, along with their families, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In a final act of generosity and altruism, Richard gifted his body to UTHealth/McGovern Medical School for medical research, embodying his lifelong commitment to learning and service. The family expresses profound gratitude to Harmony Assisted Living and Hospice 365 for their unwavering care and compassion during Richard's final months.

Richard's legacy of resilience, compassion, and intellectual curiosity will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Today, I mourn the loss of my dear friend Richard. We crossed paths at work, where he not only taught me invaluable lessons about project execution but also became a dear friend. Richard was more than a colleague; he was a mentor who shared his wisdom generously. His kindness and warmth touched everyone around him. To his family, I offer my deepest condolences. May you find peace and solace in the memories of his wonderful spirit, and may they provide comfort during this difficult time. Richard, you will be deeply missed.

I truly enjoyed my time working with, and learning from, Richard. he was always interested in the people working on his projects and even when he departed a company, still stayed in touch with those workers to offer any support or counsel on how best to resolve issues. Richard and his cheerful, positive persona will be sorely missed. I will miss our recurring phone calls!

I was sad to hear of the passing of Richard. I will remember the times that we went snow skiing in Colorado to Purgatory Ski Resort. Snow chains were required by law in Colorado during heavy snow. The chains kept coming off, good thing Richard was there to put them back on lol. We had
many good times together while he was my brother in law. Rest in Peace Richard, you will be missed.

I feel honored getting the opportunity to spend the last few months of Richard´s life with him. He fought hard to be at his best and was able to spend Christmas at home with his family. I´ll never forget you Richard! May you rest in peace!
