Richard Tyre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2018.
Richard Horatio Tyre, August 6, 1927- September 25, 2018
Teacher, Book Lover, Provocateur, Enthusiast
From his teenage years to the very day of his death, Richard was a passionate and often provocative reader, teacher of literature, and lover of ideas. He was intently interesting and interested, delving with enthusiasm into topics from graphology to gardening, art history, sailing, the mysteries of Moby Dick, and using literature to understand the human psyche. He began life in Los Angeles, raised by Roe and Jack Tyre, and overcame severe dyslexia to become a brilliant student and teacher of literature. At age 19 he met and immediately fell in love with the woman who became his wife of 67 years, Lisa Glaser Tyre. Together they lived in Philadelphia, where they raised their family, and later in Rhode Island. Richard loved his family fiercely and unreservedly: his wife Lisa, who died in 2014; his four children, Shelley, Marcie, Geoffrey, and Nickie; his two grandsons, Scott and Linc; and his late-life partner and co-conspirator in adventures of the last four years, Tonni Beth Hudson. Richard died at home with Tonni Beth, as the couple was preparing to co-teach a class on Romeo and Juliet. His sheer delight in the world - from his expression of joy when he saw a loved one, to his fascination with human beings, to his life-long devotion to teaching and thinking - will be sorely missed. His was a wonderfully lived life.
