Richard Winland, 79, a native of Copley, Ohio, passed away Nov. 19, 2009.

A 1948 graduate of Copley High School, Dick began his career as a photojournalist for the Akron Beacon Journal and The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and university photographer while a student at Akron University. After graduation in 1952 he carried his photographic expertise into service in the Korean conflict, working in a mapmaking unit near Heidelberg, Germany. Following the war, he worked several years for Morse Instruments in Hudson before moving on to Davis Printing Company in Barberton, where he was employed for three decades before retirement.

Dick was always an involved member of his community, serving the PTA, Akron Ad Club, and Bath UCC Church among other organizations. Deeply appreciative of the beauty of nature and the arts, he spent his life sharing them with others. He spent many hours walking and photographing in the parks. Dick and his wife, Ann, helped found his daughter's non-profit, Pointe West Performances. Because of his generosity many children who might never have experienced dance or music had new cultural horizons opened to them.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen, and stepdaughter, Patricia Gajewski. He is survived by wife, Ann; daughters, Suzanne Winland (Ian McIntyre) and Abby Hillman (Bill); stepsons, Gregory Watson (Kathee) and Robert Watson; and grandchildren, Jennifer and Ashlee Gajewski, Lindsay Watson, Piper and Logan Hillman, Peter Watson, and Elizabeth and Hannah McIntyre.

A memorial service will be held at Bath UCC Church, 3980 West Bath Rd., on Friday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m. Memorials can be made to Haven of Rest, Salvation Army, and Bath UCC Church.
