Rita Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2022.
Rita M. Hughes, age 72 passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2022 at her home in Bethany Beach, Delaware. She was born May 25, 1950 in West Chester, PA.

She was predeceased by parents, George and Avalon Davis. Sisters, Katie Best and Bonnie Eller and daughter Wendy Seldomridge.

She is survived by husband, David Hughes, of Bethany Beach, daughter, Kimberly Seldomridge-Walls (Nicholas Walls) of Wilmington, daughter Kristen Smith of Bethany Beach, beloved grandson, Cooper Smith of Bethany Beach, nieces Cathy Eller, Tabitha King, Rebecca Dower, great niece, Katelyn Claycomb, and great nephew, Alexander King.

She worked several years for Dr. Christopher Donoho Jr. of Newark, Delaware and recording secretary for the House of Representatives at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware.

Rita was a graduate of Kennett High School in 1968 and was active in sports during her high school career. After high school she attended Goldey Beacom and received an Associate's degree. She lived in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain with her husband for many years. Upon her return to the States, she became an active volunteer for animal rescue. She has been a passionate and dedicated volunteer and campaigner for the Democratic Party in her state. A moment of pride was when she was selected to become a delegate for the Democratic party for the state of Delaware in the last presidential election which brought her much joy. She was a lifelong supporter of Joe Biden.

Rita was beloved by her family and many friends. She was a wonderful mother, wife, aunt, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was smart, loving, and had a wicked sense of humor. One of the greatest joys and loves of her life was spending time with her grandson, Cooper; he was the light in her eye. She loved spending time with her family and her friends. She loved to travel, experience different cultures and meet new people. She could find out your whole life story within five minutes of meeting you.

She was kind and generous, and willing to give a helping hand to anyone who was in need. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 20, 2022 to 1-4 pm at Millville fire hall in Millville, Delaware. For those who would like to share and remember stories of Rita, please be prepared as we would like to hear them.

In lieu of flowers, the families suggest donations to the Juvenile Diabetic Research Foundation, JDRF. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Bethany Beach Fire Department and the Sussex County paramedics.

Mom,

I love you so much and will miss you more than words can say. I wish you didn't have to leave us, but I know it was your time. I just wanted you to be with us forever, but your heart and soul will remain with us, always. I love you, Mom.

It is hard to believe that I won't see an incoming call from Rita Hughes on my phone any more. There were so many good conversations, by phone and in person. It was an honor to know someone that worked so hard for the good causes. Rita will be missed.

Rita was my first cousin as her Dad and my Mother were brother and sister.

Rita and I were first cousins as her Dad and my Mother were brother and sister. Growing up we lived in Unionville and our families were pretty close and we visited a good deal. I and my siblings are older than Rita and her sisters so before you know it we all got married and moved off. Last year Rita contacted another one of our cousins and we all got together at a restaurant in Rehobeth and all got reaquainted and had a lovely visit with the promise to do it again soon. Unfortunately that did not happen and I'm surely sorry it did not. My deepest sympathy to all her family as I am sure she will be missed. In loving memory her cousin Carol {Burnett} Williams.

Rita was one of the most dedicated and hardest working persons we have ever met. Our world was a better place with her in it.

RitaMarie, the beautiful little auburn haired little next door neighbor I babysat on. The sweetest funniest little girl. The hours she and her family spent with my Mom and me at Hollaway beach, sitting on our frontporches uptown on State Street, and then her being my wonderful junior bridesmaid when Den and I got married . We lost touch until a few years ago and I was and am so proud of the woman, mother, grandmother and politically active person she became. We only regret that we did not get down for the visit we were always going to make last year. She was so special . She will always be a ray of Sunshine in anyone who knew her life. I am sure Bonnie and Katie will be waiting for their loving sister

Rita was a great Biden Delaware Delegate. She provided me Delaware contacts for "I know JOE" stories for ten successful weekly Nationwide Zoom meetings for the 2020 Presidential election.
