Rob Guest Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 23 to Oct. 14, 2008.

STAGE queen Marina Prior has paid tribute to her close friend and co-star Rob Guest, saying the actor would be terribly missed.

Prior, who starred with Guest in Les Miserables in the late 1980s, and The Phantom of the Opera, said he would be missed professionally and personally.

Guest, 57, died in hospital overnight after his life support machine was turned off. He was surrounded by family and friends.

The English-born actor had been starring as the Wizard of Oz in the hit musical Wicked. He rushed to hospital on Tuesday night with bleeding on the brain after suffering a major stroke.

Prior said the music theatre fraternity was devastated by Guest's death.

"He had an amazing ability to gain the audience's empathy straight away, and he was incredibly charismatic," she told 3AW Radio.

"As the Phantom he had this extraordinary magnetism and charisma.

Prior said Guest never missed a performance as the Phantom.

"We used to always laugh that he would go on in an iron lung if he had to," she said.

"I think that's just why everybody has been so shocked, he's such a robust and vital person.

"He's one of those people that gives 400 per cent and ... he's a man of great integrity, a great family man."

Producers of the hit musical say the show will go on despite the shock death.

Wicked producer John Frost said despite their grief cast mates would continue to perform the show, with Guest's understudy Rodney Dobson to take over the role of the Wizard.

He said the cast had pulled together yesterday to perform both a matinee and evening show.

"The show went on and it was a terrific one and I think they all rallied knowing that Rob was waiting for them somewhere and they gave it for Rob last night," Mr Frost told 3AW radio.

"The audience was great, they really embraced Rodney Dobson."

Mr Frost said Guest's partner Kellie Dickerson, who is the show's musical director, and children Christopher, 19, and Amy, 17 were distraught.

He said he was worried about how Ms Dickerson would handle her eventual return to the show, because she was so used to watching Guest on stage from the music pit.

"My biggest fear is that she will come back to work and have to look up on that stage and he won't be there."

Mr Frost said Guest loved the theatre and acted as a mentor to the junior members of the cast.

"He was loved by the whole company," he said.

I have fond memories of the very first time I saw The Phantom of the Opera, with Rob in the starring role. I was captivated and he helped me to become the musical theatre fan that I am today. I only wish I could have seen him in Wicked.

What a shock that he is no longer with us.

My condolences to his family and friends at this sad and difficult time.

Words cannot describe the way we both feel. We had the pleasure of meeting him after a performance of Music Man, sharing a cup of tea and chatting for a good ten minutes. We saw Phantom many times and he had my wife in tears singing Music Of The Night, especially at the finale as he states " It's over now".His music will never end.

Rob, you may have played the lead roles in many large productions but you gave so much joy to New Zealanders in the 70's and again on the tours you performed through small town New Zealand in latter years. You will be sorely missed on both sides of the "pond". Rest in Peace.

Rob was a true gentleman - ever the professional. He worked hard & was always a fantastic role model for the younger performers.
I first met Rob when he was married to his first wife Lynnette Perry in Auckland, working at TVNZ at the time - Lynnette's grandparents lived next door to my dad - so we saw them often.
Rest in peace Rob - all our thoughts go to his family & friends!

Rob you may be gone but the legacy you left will live on and never be forgotten.
We first became aware of you Rob at Foxtel Studios at the taping of Wicked. It was very obvious you were a talented caring humble gentleman. Your wife Kellie was so proud of you and also Anthony and the young cast. Then we saw you on Kerri-Anne K show. You were obviously so proud of Anthony and Rob and also Amanada and Lucy. Then we saw you in Wicked. What a fantastic production. I'm sure you were a fantastic mentor to Anthony who shared your dressing room and all the cast.
Our thoughts and our prayers are with Kellie and your children and all your many friends and the cast and crew of Wicked.
You were a star Rob and it was so sad you were taken so young.
God bless you Rob and your family your bright star will shine on in heaven.
My sympathies and my prayers are with your family and friends and the wonderful cast and crew of Wicked. God bless you Rob.

From life full of plunder
The soul we encountered
Was a man full of talent
And a man full of wonder

To those many you inspired
Those that looked up to you
Many happy thoughts came
And helped see them through

Though you weren’t all that old
Your skills never ended
You’re a man who we’ll miss
And you’ll always be gold.
