Robert Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 23, 2024.
Robert Wallace Allen, 62, of Cohasset, MA, passed away unexpectedly on December 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was the beloved husband of Christine Allen and devoted stepdad to Ian Whitney (Morgan) of Cambridge, MA and Anna Whitney of Boston, MA.

He was the son of the late Josephine and George Allen of Amherst, NH, and brother to Margaret Howe (Bruce) of Mendon, MA; David Allen (Janet) of North Yarmouth, ME; George Allen Jr. of San Diego, CA; and brother-in-law to Carolyn Brooks of Long Beach, CA; John Murray (Julie) of Stoneham, MA; James Murray (Jacinta) of Norwell, MA, and beloved cousin to many.

Bob leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews: Graham Howe (Katie), Laura Howe Alnaal (Osman), Carolyn Allen, Catherine Allen (Tony), Reed Allen, Cooper Allen, Ben Brooks, Jack Murray, Kiera Murray, Abigail Murray, Liam Murray, and Emma Murray. He was great-uncle to Safiya Alnaal, Alia Alnaal and Nash Howe.

He grew up in Amherst, New Hampshire and attended Cardigan Mountain School, Kents Hill School, and Plymouth State University. He loved the many childhood summers he spent with his family on the coast of Maine and the St. Lawrence River, as well as the many seasons with Christine, Anna, and Ian in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Dedicating over 20 years to Granite Telecommunications, Bob helped to build the company from its founding. Known as "BA" at work, he played a pivotal role in shaping the company's values, community, and success. Bob was a trusted leader, supportive mentor, and a beloved friend to many. His many enduring friendships at Granite held a special place in his heart.

Bob was continually seeking out his next big challenge-be it running a marathon in each decade of his life, biking in the Pan-Mass Challenge, completing countless races and workout challenges, or all of the steps along the way of helping to build a company of thousands from just a few people in a room. And in between, Bob loved spending time at the beaches in Cohasset and Hull with Christine and his dogs (Luna and Nanook), biking the trails in Waterville with Anna, plotting his next athletic feats with Ian, and sharing his love of coffee by making espresso shots for anyone who would accept one.

He was a patient teacher of all things and a lifelong learner. Topics of interest encompassed the events of the world, history, local birds, meditation practice, and his children's career fields. He was often found, coffee in hand, taking notes on books he was reading, sharing insights with family, and seeking out others' perspectives.

Most importantly, those who knew Bob would agree that he was one of the kindest, most generous people you could ever meet. As someone recently said, "You only needed to spend 5 minutes with Bob to love him." Calm and steady, Bob was the kind of person who listened deeply and cared about your life and your interests. He was always generous in helping others– never hesitating to give money to those who needed it, to get dinner for the group, to help fix your broken car, or offer words of reassurance when you were down. Without a moment of complaint, Bob took care of Christine for months last year after she broke her ankle. And, as was his way, he spent the last few minutes before going into surgery helping a wheelchair-bound elderly man in the admitting room.

Beyond the milestones, races, challenges, and professional achievements that he accomplished, what Bob will long be remembered for was his kindness and beauty of spirit.

Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, January 3 from 4 to 7PM at the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home at 1 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA, and a Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 4 at 11AM at First Parish Unitarian Church at 30 N. Main, Cohasset, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, American Brain Foundation, or Boston Children's Hospital.

I remember BA from working at Granite years ago. I didn´t know him well, but I know how much he was admired and respected by all who worked with him. I was shocked to hear of his passing, because he struck me as the kind of person who could solve any problem. When you were in a meeting and BA was sitting at the head of the table, you knew he was going to get it done and done right. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

I was a friend of Bob´s in four years of working with him at Granite, and also a "transplant" to Cohasset from Winchester. After I left Granite he never failed to stop during his bike rides around town to say hello. I can say without reservation that he was often the "glue" that held things together at Granite - always professional, enthusiastic and gracious! I´m sure he will be missed there, and in every facet of his exemplary life. I am so sorry for your loss, but he certainly left a wake of happiness in his trail. I was blessed to be part of it for a short time. Rest in peace, Bob.

BA was the nicest man anyone could have ever had the good fortune of knowing. I worked with him for nearly 30 years. He was the consummate professional, the epitome of the best of the best when it came to serving his customers, his people (all were his family) and community. He was one of my very first professional mentors and someone you could ALWAYS count on to "fix" the problems that were never ever easy to fix and so often required long after hours and weekends. You did not have to look further than BA to know the meaning of hard work, going above and beyond, sacrifice and commitment and he did it everyday with a smile. RIP Bob Allen

Bob,
You're the best brother-in-law anyone could ever ask for. Always ready to pitch in and always with a cheerful demeanor. Even when we cleaned out the attic in my mother's house. I'll miss those trips to the end of days.

Bob (BA) was an jncredible teammate, boss and friend you get once in a lifetime. I will miss our daily check in calls as we always talked on the way him from Granite to catch up on the day, hot client items and also general conversations around family, things going on in the world and weekend activities. We biked Wompatuck many times in the cold and heat, fell down and had a ton of laughs. Such a presence at Granite and always wanted to help no matter the situation. We will remember the good times as we had so many and we will carry on his amazing legacy

Thoughts go out to Christine, Anna and Ian and the entire Allen family

Hi Bob
Thank you for helping me feel part of the family. I loved going out Christmas shopping with you on Christmas Eve. I think I´m the only one that liked the blanket you bought Christine. Thank you for being the one who stayed with me when I hurt my knee in Montana. I miss you. I love you Bob.

Dear Christine, Ian and Anna,
My deepest condolences for your loss. While I saw you three and Bob mostly in passing when you visited your sister/aunt Carolyn across the street from me in California, I knew of your family as part of my best friend´s sharing of how proud she was of you all.

Bob´s good nature and loving relationship with the family was clear to see and I can only imagine how missed he will be.

I hold you in my thoughts and wish you healing and peace in these months to come.

Sincerely,
Vicky Russell

Huge loss for everyone, he was the constant professional, a confidant, boss (of 22 years) and most of all an incredible friend. I will remember our laughs and we had so many, our Tough Mudders, Pan Mass rides, and our marathon runs! BA and I texted each other multiple times a day and not just about work, he was always checking in on me, my family and my fury friend, he always pushed me to getting a dog and I finally did! Glad he met Cash, he loved him!
Thoughts and prayers for family, the Granite community and anyone he crossed paths with over the years, he made a difference for sure to many lives.
