Robert Austin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2014.
Robert passed away peacefully on May 8, 2014 at the age of 80 years. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on July 27, 1933 to Robert James and Lena Louise Austin.
He married Evelyn Marie Ray in 1952 and happily celebrated their 62nd anniversary in March of this year.
Robert joined the Air Force in 1954 and proudly served his country. The Air Force will honor him at his memorial service conducted Saturday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Mission Northeast, 22098 Loop 494, New Caney, Texas. His eulogy will be given by Mr. Jimmy Tucker, a longtime friend of the family. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his long and meaningful life he enjoyed with them.
He retired from International Harvester after 29 years and moved with his wife to Kingwood, Texas in 1989 to be among his children and their families.
Austin was a loving father and extremely proud of his three children, Ronnie Austin, preceded in death, Cindy Childress and her husband David, of Kingwood and Steve Austin and his wife, Kelley of Navasota. He is also survived by his grandchildren Shane (Andrea) Childress of Kingwood, Kelley (Justin) Osborne of Humble, Candis Austin of Houston, David Austin of Memphis and Misty (Les) Boyle; as well as great grandchildren, extended family and a host of loving friends.
He was a passionate man who enjoyed animals and helping others. After retiring he spent over 25 years volunteering for the Mission Northeast in New Caney, Texas. He believed you could change a community, one life at a time! He would reach out to the elderly, a hungry passerby, and even rescue animals in need. He was always there to help friends with household projects, animal sitting, or whatever else they needed him for.
The family is asking that anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory can do so to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Robert was the nicest neighbor that anybody could possibly want. He was a good honest man who like to help his church, friends and family. We have lost a great person but the lord has welcomed another wonderful person home.

My deepest sympathies to the Austin family! Mr. Austin, as I knew him, will be greatly missed in the neighborhood. I lived next door to the Austin's most of my life from a young girl until adulthood. Mr. Austin was kind of like a grandfather image (because I never had my own grandfathers growing up). He was always so helpful & such a willing handyman when my parents were in need of help. He will be greatly missed by me & my parents. Sending you my love & condolences, Evelyn!
