Robert "Bob" Harquail Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 1, 2017.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Robert (Bob) Harquail (born July 26, 1932). Bob died Wednesday May, 31 at Bathurst Chaleur Hospital. He passed away in the loving company of his wife June Harquail and family.

In addition to his wife June, he is survived by his son Michael Harquail (wife Jane Harquail, children: Peter Harquail, Andrea Harquail, Danny Harquail), and his daughters Judy Harquail (husband Ross Paton, daughter Arran Duguid) and Donna Harquail (husband Eric Ducharme, children Victoria Savard, Charles Eric Ducharme, Marc Antoine Ducharme). Bob came from a large family with 17 brothers and sisters, for whom he cared deeply.

Bob was a well-known figure in the town of Dalhousie and the province of New Brunswick. He will be remembered for his great contribution and dedication to minor hockey, minor baseball, the Dalhousie Fire fighters, the New Brunswick Fire fighters association, the Dalhousie town council, the Knights of Columbus, his labour union local, the Dalhousie meals on Wheels program, the Canadian Red Cross through their blood donor clinics, the New Brunswick genealogy society, the Dalhousie town museum, and the local Credit Union.

Bob's love of gardening, sports and travelling with June and their children and grandchildren kept him busy. He still always had time for a coffee at the local coffee shop with his friends.

Bob's courage to stand up to do the right thing, his energy, his passion, his community-minded desire to help others and his positive outlook on life will continue to inspire for years to come. We have all lost a pillar of the community. We love you Bob (Dad).

A funeral mass will be held at the St. John Bosco Church in Dalhousie, Saturday at 2:00 pm.

Visitation at Maher's Funeral Home, 421 Victoria St., Dalhousie, Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (219 Main Street, Suite 2, Bathurst, NB E2A 1A9 - 1-800-455-9090 - www.cancer.ca) or the Dalhousie dialysis unit (189 Lily Lake Road, P.O. Box 880, Campbellton, NB E3N 3H3 "specify Dalhousie Dialysis Unit")

Michael Harquail

June 4, 2017

This is the eulogy written and delivered by Michael Harquail:

We are here today to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of the rock of our family, and a pillar of this community.

In our daily lives, we all perform many roles. My father was awesome at all of them. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, a friend, and a community builder.

His contributions to this community will be difficult to replace. He made significant contributions to minor hockey, minor baseball, the Dalhousie Fire fighters, the New Brunswick Fire fighters association, the Dalhousie town council, the Knights of Columbus, his labour union local, the Dalhousie Meals on Wheels program, the Canadian Red Cross in helping my mother run the blood donor clinic in this town for 42 years, the New Brunswick genealogy society, the Dalhousie town museum, and the local Credit Union.

And he was a spiritual man and an active participant in this church.

My father was always a humble and grateful man. Although we lived far apart, we did have the opportunity to spend a good amount of time together. At the end of each visit or even at the end of every phone call, my dad would always say

June, Michael, Judy, Donna and family:

Remembering you all today as you gather with family and friends to remember your husband, dad and grandfather. I am so sorry for your loss.

I hold you in prayer this afternoon as your gather for Mass and take time to thank God for the special gift he was to all who knew him. I have my own personal memories of Bob and I feel a deep love as I remember. During my teenage years I always felt welcome at your home. Bob always had a smile, liked to tease, gave genuine hugs and made me feel special. Through the years I have always been grateful for my time in your lives. . . . I was so pleased to see Bob a few years back when he visited at my parents home.
May the peace of God be in your hearts and the love of God surround you during this very difficult and tender time.
Love, Vivian (Blake) Moores

My heart is broken. I will always treasure my memories of my "after mass chats" with Bob when I'm back in Dalhousie visiting, I always look forward to his big hugs and giant smiles when I see him. I feel blessed to have spent time chatting with him just this past Sunday after mass. He was a special friend and I will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to you; June, Michael, Judy, Donna and your families. You were all his shining stars. May you take comfort in knowing that Bob touched so many people with his kindness, curiosity, faith, and his desire to improve the lives of others. Although I am not able to attend his last farewell mass, my thoughts and prayers are being sent from Kansas as I say a rosary in his memory. Shirley Dawn (Parent) Magee, Topeka, Kansas

Life is a book in volumes three-
The past, the present, and the yet-to-be,
The past is written and laid away,
The present we're writing every day,
And the last and best of volumes three
is locked from sight God keeps the key.
This is a very special person, for some he's a father, an uncle, a brother, a cousin, a nephew and a hero to others. He was a true picture of devotion, compassion, leadership, loving, and understanding towards his friends, family and his community. Dalhousie has lost a GEM, but then we have gained an angel to protect us. Bobby may be physically gone, but he will always remain in our hearts and in our minds. May you rest in peace my friend, and be free from pain. Btw, say Hi to my Dad for me and give him a hug. I'm sure he is waiting for you. My deepest sympathies to the families. xox

It is with extreme sadness that we heard of Bob's sudden passing. Bob was a pillar in his community, a tireless volunteer and a beautiful person. More importantly, a loving husband, father, grandfather and very special friend.

We have many positive memories of our fun times with Bob & June both at our house and theirs - always surrounded by loving friends, good food and laughter.

Rest in peace our dear friend knowing that you will be forever missed and understanding that you have made a positive impact on all our lives and your community.
