Bob was a huge inspiration in the lives of our children, especially our son Evan. Evan considered Bob to be much more than a teacher and even more than a mentor. He counted Bob among his "best friends". There are too few Bob Bogans in this world. Every school should have at least one on staff, and each of us should be blessed to know such a caring and committed human being. He is greatly missed, but his lessons live on. WE were all part of the class of 1960 at SHS and there was never a closer bunch of friends. Our family owned the drug store and soda fountain hang out where lots of fond memories of all of us growing up were made. I will miss you.

January 19, 2007

I so enjoyed Bob's humor and friendship as we were growing up in Shelby,Ohio. Our mothers were friends and I remember the two of us being railroaded into singing She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain to entertain at a women's club meeting when we were about twelve. We were horrible! We swore each other to secrecy.

The way I remember you is "Bobby" Bogan from Broadway with the sweetest Mom in town. Oh, how you loved and respected her. We grew up together, shared classrooms from the fourth grade on through high school and graduated in May of 1960. I have served as treasurer of the First Lutheran Church for the last 32 years and love to tell the story about you saving your lunch money so that you could help with the expense of the new addition on the church. Many many times over the last 40 plus years since I've seen you I wondered what happened to my dear friend. You loved your fancy cars back then too...bet the latest one didn't have a running board. You were a joy, you were a dear friend, you were special! I will continue to miss you!

Bob was my friend and neighbor in Ashland, Ohio, in the early 1970s, while he was a student at Ashland College (now Ashland University). We both lived in the apartments at 325 Hillcrest Dr. in Ashland. After he moved to California in 1973 or 1974, along with his silver-blue VW Bug, I lost track of him. He was a good man then, and, from reading the tributes to him in this guest book, he evolved into an even better man. I extend my condolences to his family and all those who called him friend, teacher, and colleague.

Because of your guidance and support our daughter is going to college in southern California. We will always remember your humor and encouragement. You made homework fun! She always looked forward to her weekly meetings with you. God bless you Mr. Bogan. You are truly one in a billion.

Bob, you were always my support after difficult staff meetings or situations. You were 110% for the students at El Sereno. You were an essential staff member at El Sereno--it took three staff members to fill everything you did for us! I still expect you to walk through my door asking for some junk food to eat because you wouldn't take the time to get some "real" food. I have still not come to realize you are gone.
We are naming the science lab after you--it is now "Bogan's House".

Mr. Bogan was my 7th grade teacher at St. Ignatius in 1978-79. I remember how he was able to motivate an entire west coast school to get excited about the Baltimore Oriole's race for the pennant and their ultimate trip to the world series the following year. He gave me the encouragement to play soccer even though I had never played before and he pushed me to develop my football skills. I was very sad to hear of his passing as I am sure many are.

Bob was a generous and kind man to so many. He helped our family thru hard times and was a mentor and temendous support to my boys in their lives(Derric, Dustin and Drew Rykert). I will always be grateful to him for all he did and the great friend he was to us.

As a former Human Resources Recruiter, I saw very few people employed in positions that reflected their passions and dreams. My uncle, Bob Bogan, was a person who lived his passions.

My grandmother told me that he talked about being a teacher throughout his childhood. He even helped children and young adults when he wasn't employed in the education field.

We have found numerous pictures with him and Vietnamese children while he was stationed in Vietnam. I also recently came across an article in the New York Times about his efforts to help inner city kids stay in school. Even though he was employed in a highly stressful job in New York City, he gave his time to chair the New York Jaycees Clinton Career's Project, designed to lower the high school dropout rate.

I could go on and on with stories of sacrifice, compassion, and dedication. I know he would want everyone to remember his dedication toward helping teens stay in school. He knew the key to their futures was to encourage them to get their degrees.

For those he helped, please complete your education and reach out to others younger than you. For all who worked with him, please remember his passion and use that to motivate you when times are difficult and discouraging.

If anyone would like to help support his cause, please make a donation to the El Sereno Memorial Scholarship which will award annual college scholarships to graduating seniors. Please make checks out to Oppenheimer Funds, write Bob Bogan in the memo, and mail to El Sereno High School, 8301 Madison Avenue, Fair Oaks, CA 95628, Attn: Judy Elston.

Thank you all for your wonderful stories and memories. The family truly appreciates your kind words and loving thoughts. May God help us all through this time of loss.

'Bog', you have had an unimaginable impact on my life and have ultimately brought me to where I am today. You believed in a young string bean, and gave me a chance to further my dreams. I can't express how much that means to me. You offered me support, wisdom, guidance, and helped me through times of instability and uncertainty. You believed in me and helped me believe in myself. I still havn't given up on the dream, but now, seven years later, I've got a degree and even more determination to succeed.
Through you, I have made many jurneys, experienced many things, and met so many people. As with anyone, college was filled with ups and downs, but you were there for me through the good and the bad. I can't thank you enough for that. Looking back, I would have never met all of these amazing people, and the last seven years of my life would have been completely different.
I've traveled, made friends, and grown as a human because of you Bog.
I know I didn't always express it, but I know you know how much I appriciated everything you did for me and everything that you stood for. I took great pride playing in front of you, succeeding in school, and becoming the man that I am today.
Bog, you have left this world a better place. I thank you for everything and will always hold you close to my heart.
You're the man Bog.

10 years have passed since I started at Independence HS and I am proud and feel privileged to have known Mr. Bogan. His love of science never ceased to amaze me, I brought home tap water once from Lake Tahoe and we did chemical samples of the water to find out how high the ph level was in the water, how much chlorine they had added and what minerals we might find; only because Tahoe water is supposed to be so pure. We had a great laugh afterwards at our findings.

Mr. Bogan could be ornery, get worked up and rant and rave, but it was because he felt so strongly about the matter. He was also a man with a big heart, a man who remembered you at Christmas, many little elves and figurines adorn my office. I look at them now and remember those precious moments. I also remember when he was putting together his corvette, literally piece by piece of items he had purchased from EBay. He told us that his bumper would be delivered and it would probably be a pretty big box, he was right. He loved EBay, and I know EBay loved Mr. Bogan too.

He will be missed but he’s in a better place, buying off EBay galore, and having a grand ole time watching baseball! Hit a homerun for all of us, we’ll be watching!!

I worked with Bob for several years at Independence High School. He always had a story to tell, a car to show, a good place to eat to tell you about and a student to see. Bob was a person who went beyond limits to help his students. He made a difference. We will miss him.

Bob, What can i say about bog that no one already knows. I have lived with him for a long time now. His passion was his kids, and his kids were all of us. He has changed my life so much. He always had to make his point though in everything I did. Even if i did not agree with it, He would give me a run for my money. I love him so much and now I dont know what to do as like everyone else. As for the kids, make sure you graduate college cause otherwise bob is going to be very upset, cause that is what he cared most about, education. For all you baseball house kids, enjoy the memories of the house cause those were the best years of my life that no one can take away. Well bog ill see you at my graduation!

IF ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS RECENT YEARS CONTACT ME PLEASE CAUSE I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE TIMES BEFORE. THANK YOU.
LOVE YOU BOB.

Teaching and baseball, for Bob, were like the tightly stitched and endless seam pattern that surrounds a baseball; each stitch held the magic and passion he felt for his beloved sport and his teaching . Bob and I worked together for about fifteen years, during which time I had the pleasure to experience his great sense of humor, see his wily smile with a half-raised eyebrow, know of his love for all things made of chocolate, and be the beneficiary of his keen sense of politics and his extensive scientific knowledge. He was unassumingly kind, funny, irreverent and greatly loved. He once explained to me the technique of throwing a curve ball—he surely is doing the same now for a heavenly audience. I will miss him.

Bob was a colleague and friend of mine for the past 13 years. He came to work anxious to discuss the latest item he saw on Ebay, a promising young baseball player, or the current state of the local, state, or national politics.

Bob was full of insight, dedication, and knowledge about a wide-variety of subjects. But, his love of cars, baseball, golf, and young people needing his tutelage, is legendary.

Bob's giant heart and gentle sweetness for humankind will be one of his best legacies. What more could one ask to be their imprint on the world?

The loss of Bob on our staff is an unfillable void.

Mr. Bogan was my 12th grade (1999) teacher at El Serino High School. He not only helped me mature, but opened my eyes to understand more of what this world had to offer. He will be missed and will definately never be forgotten. Rest in peace Mr. Bogan.
