Robert Brotemarkle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2016.
SURPRISE - Robert and Helen died in a sudden and tragic car accident on June 12, 2016. Bob was the son of Robert and Alice Brotemarkle and was born in Kansas City, Mo., on March 25, 1931. Helen was the daughter of August and Sophie Luehrman and was born in Lexington, Mo., on August 4, 1934. Bob spent four maturing years in the Air Force before meeting Helen, who was teaching music at the time. They were married on June 29, 1962. Robert is a graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia. Helen is a graduate of Missouri Valley, Marshall, Mo., and has multiple Masters degrees from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Robert worked as an account executive at Western Electric/Lucent in Kansas City. Helen pursued her passion of music and early childhood development, working as an elementary music teacher and then as founding Director of Red Door Children's Development Center, Lee's Summit, Mo. She was also closely involved with the League of Women Voters and local planning organizations during the 1970's. Robert and Helen were very involved with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Raytown, Mo., where Helen was the organists for 30 years. After both retired they moved to Surprise, Ariz., and into the community of Sun City Grand. They eventually became intricately involved in the parish of All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church, Sun City. The Church welcomed them with open arms and fully embraced their membership to which they were grateful. Robert also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Masonic Lodge, Raytown, Mo. He was a past member of Scottish Rite, Missouri Valley, and Ararat Shrine Temple, Kansas City, Mo. Helen was President of the local PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) chapter and an active member of The Order of the Daughters of the King. She graced many local music events and groups with her gifts on the piano and organ. Robert and Helen Brotemarkle are survived by their two sons, David and John. David is married to Rosane and lives in Medford, N.Y. John is married to Michelle and lives in Virginia Beach, Va. They have two granddaughters, Amanda and Sophie, both daughters of John and Michelle. Robert is also survived by his sister, Betty Ann Luehrman, of Kansas City. Both are survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Their life was celebrated in conjunction with the 4 p.m. service at All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 18, 2016. A future memorial service and final inurnment will be held at All Saints this Fall. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to All Saints of the Desert, Sun City, Ariz., in memory of Robert and Helen Brotemarkle.

John and David: I just now googled your folks when I didn't get a Christmas card and mine came back only to find their obit. I am terribly sorry to see this. They were some of our favorite people in the world and you kids played with our kids for years when you were young. This must have been a terrible shock to you and your kids. I am so sorry to hear of this tragedy. Pat Matthews Tillery

John & David,

I am crying today. I just goggled your Dad's name and learned what had happened to them a year ago. I should have known immediately when I quit receiving emails from them. I lost a son on June 8, 2016 so my mind was on other things. You may not remember me, Roger and I left Raytown in 1966. Roger passed away ten years ago.
We lived very close to you Mother and Dad and shared many happy hours with them both there and in Arizona. We visited them there a few times. I visited them there just a few years ago. My heart is broken for you and your families.

Heartbroken ar the sad news of the tragic deaths of my childhood pal Bob and his dear wife Helen. We were in classes together from Kindergarten at Whittier through Northeast High School class of 1948. Through the many years we remained in touch and in later years with emails we shared photos , family news and travels. Our last communication was about the upcoming trip to Montana. They were generous loving and giving people. They were so proud of the accomplishments of their sons and granddaughters. Always eager to share their lives. Bob and Helen leave beautiful memories of a lifelong friendship. They will be missed. Prayers for their families

Helen holds a very special place in my heart as my former boss at Red Door and also my mentor. She encouraged me to return to college where I got my associates degree in early childhood and she is the reason I am a Preschool director today. My heart is heavy with sadness of her and her husband's sudden passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Bobby Brotemarkle and I were back yard neighbors and school mates from second grade on thru high school. We have corresponded thru email for the last couple of years .
I have fond memories of playing in a large box on the Brotemarkles picnic table . It was our aeroplane and Bob was the pilot and I the "hostess"! Early days of flight!
We, and all of us still left in our 80s,are saddened by this tragic loss at this time of life. The Whittier gang will miss him . The Northeasters still left will miss him.
Helen was such a great companion and lovely part of his life.
May their family live the kind of lives that they were so fortunate to have bequeathed to them.
Lovingly, Alice June Lewis Sessions
