Robert Copeland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 21, 2023.
Bob Copeland, 88, of Pomona, CA, passed away on June 17, 2023. Bob was born on April 5, 1935, in Flintville, TN to Jesse Copeland and Jessie Evans Copeland. Bob was a kind, loving, and funny man who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Marie Copeland, his daughter Teresa Downing, son Barry (Sandy) Copeland, grandchildren Vanessa Downing, Ashley Downing, Trevor Downing, Garrett Copeland, Abbyanne Copeland, Walker Copeland, great-grandson Mica Downing, sister Freda Allyn, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leon Copeland and Frank Copeland, sisters Janet Beasley and Marie Steelman, and son-in-law Blake Downing.

Bob was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1959. Upon leaving the Navy, he went on to have a career in electronics engineering starting with Philco and later moved into a civil servant position for the U.S. Department of Defense. He was an avid woodworker with a keen-eye for detail and spent many happy hours in his workshop creating beautiful pieces of furniture and other items. When Bob was not woodworking, he could be found on the golf course or volunteering for Tax Aide, a free tax program for seniors.

Visitation will be held at Todd Memorial Chapel (570 N. Garey Ave. Pomona, CA 91767) from 11 am - 1 pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Private family gravesite service to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Alzheimer's Association.

Bob was my mentor in the TaxAide program. His patience with our transition from doing it with a calculator and a ruler to keep on the right line to computers (no math errors!) was priceless. He taught us with experiential notes that made it personal as well as helping us along. His generosity and kindness will always be remembered. diane Temple

I was fortunate to interact with Bob when he was volunteering as an AARP Certified Tax Preparer. He was the Local Coordinator at the LaVerne site, and he was such a pleasure to volunteer with. He told me about his wood working, and he brought in samples for me to see. They were amazing. He was always kind, professional, and just the nicest person. Betsy MacLaren

Marie, I am so sorry for your loss, which is a loss for all of us who knew Bob. He was my mentor and teacher in the Tax Aide program, we worked side-by-side for many years and became good friends. He was indeed a kind and generous man. What I remember most about him is how patient and calm he was. When his many clients would come to have their taxes done, if I was available and Bob was busy I would offer to take care of them, but most of the time they would say, "Oh no, I want Bob." A true gentleman.

Bob was indeed talented. His wood art was innovative and masterful. But his love and respect for his wife, my friend, Marie, was inspirational for waiting for and finding one´s true soulmate.
