Robert Cumming Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2025.
Robert "Bob" Cumming, 87, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, in Manahawkin, New Jersey. Born on September 29, 1937, in Newark, New Jersey, Bob lived a life marked by dedication to family, community, and service.

Bob's professional journey began in the bowling industry, where he began as a pin chaser at Broad and Bay Lanes in Bloomfield. He eventually became a co-owner with his business partner John Colgate. The business thrived until a tragic fire in 1977 brought its operations to an end. Undeterred, Bob went on to own Bob's Valley Bowl and later concluded his career working for Nationwide at Garden Palace in Clifton. Throughout his career, Bob was widely recognized for his exceptional customer service and dedication to the community.

His influence extended far beyond the lanes. Bob was known for the profound impact he had on young people-mentoring them not only in bowling but in life. Many have shared how Bob helped shape their character and instilled values that stayed with them long after they left the alley.

In recognition of his contributions to youth and inclusive sports programming, Bob was inducted into both the Bloomfield and Passaic County Bowling Halls of Fame-not for personal skills or scores-but for founding numerous leagues for children with disabilities. His legacy as a builder of character and advocate for inclusion remains one of his most enduring achievements.

Bob's devotion to community was also evident through his years of service as the President of the Glen Ridge Athletic Association. Players fondly recall the excitement of choosing uniforms from the attic at 58 Glen Ridge Avenue-a tradition that became a cherished memory for many local families.

A man of deep faith, Bob was actively involved in Presbyterian congregations throughout his life. As a young father at Montgomery Presbyterian Church in Belleville, he wrote plays for children's performances-most memorably a Christmas story told from a reporter's perspective in the 1970s. In retirement, he and Jo Ann became devoted members of First Presbyterian Church of Tuckerton, where Bob served as head usher and participated on both the Session and Board of Deacons. He also shared his artistic talents by crafting woodworking pieces for church events.

Bob's passions were many. He had an undeniable sweet tooth! His grandchildren especially remember trips to ice cream shops with their beloved "Poppy," who never met a dessert he didn't like.

His Scottish heritage was a source of great pride. From tartan colors and family crests to bumper stickers proclaiming his roots, Bob celebrated his ancestry with enthusiasm. Yet even this pride was eclipsed by two other loves: his family and the New York Mets. A longtime season ticket holder, Bob and Jo Ann would cheer on their favorite team-a tradition that continued well into later years.

The Jersey Shore held a special place in Bob's heart. Whether it was summers spent in Manasquan with his sister Mary Ellen and cousin Peggy or annual family vacations in Surf City, the shore was a part of who he was. Since 1999, Bob and JoAnn made their home in Manahawkin, retiring in 2002 to enjoy shore life.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Jo Ann, sons Scott (with partner Cindy Alexander), Doug (with wife Cynthia), Alan (with wife Amy), daughter Sue Ellen (with husband Pete), sister Mary Ellen Vrana, thirteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held September 13 at the First Presbyterian Church of Tuckerton,210 Main St, Tuckerton, NJ, 08087, beginning at 11 am. A light luncheon will follow at the church.

I was so sorry to hear about Uncle Bob´s passing. I will always remember the family Fourth of July picnics in Toms River at Bobby´s Mom & Dad´s. He and my father in law always talked about their favorite football teams and had great discussions. We were for the Eagles and he was always in the Cowboys camp! Rest in peace Uncle Bob my prayers and condolences to Aunt Jo and the cousins. Love Maria

Mr. Cummings, you were such a great man and I will never forget all the hours spent chatting with you and Mrs. C at your kitchen table. You always cheered us on in softball and made us laugh at our teenage selves.I will think of you often !!! RIP good and faithful servant.
