Robert Cummings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 23, 2024.
Robert Marshall Cummings, known affectionately as Bob, passed away on August 18, 2024, at the age of 68, in Elk Grove Village, IL. Born on August 28, 1955, in Chicago. Bob was the oldest son of Bill Cummings and Marie Colombani.

Bob graduated from St. Benedict High School in Chicago, where he formed many lifelong friendships. His career began at Airborne Express in 1984, continuing with the company after its acquisition by DHL in 2003. Over the years, Bob served in various roles including driver, union steward, and business agent for Local 705, always making new friends along the way.

An avid sports fan, Bob passionately supported the Chicago Bears and was a lifelong White Sox fan. He also enjoyed golfing and often expressed a wish for more time to improve his game. Known for his huge smile and readiness with a joke, Bob's laugh was both infectious and unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Bob is survived by his mother, Marie Colombani, his wife of 42 years, Pat Stanton; his children, Caitlin (Tony) Raio, Colleen (Kevin) Hobday, and Casey (Jeremy) Robins; and his cherished grandchildren, Xander, Leo, Brielle, Ava, Alessia, and Nathan. He also leaves behind his brothers, Michael (Dolly) and James (Patricia), along with many adored nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Cummings, and his sister, Susan Marie.

A Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on August 28, 2024, at Queen of the Rosary, located at 750 W. Elk Grove Boulevard in Elk Grove Village. In a fitting tribute to his passion, attendees are requested to wear Chicago Bears attire, per Bob's wishes.

Contributions in memory of Bob can be made to the American Cancer Society, honoring his compassionate spirit. Bob's legacy of laughter, love, and generosity will continue to inspire and resonate with all who were fortunate enough to know him.

I first met Bob almost 20 years ago when I got an invite via a mutual friend to his annual golf outing. Bob accepted me immediately and we've been friends ever since. His Bear tailgates were phenominal and everyone that attended the events exhibited the same camaraderie that Bob infectiously displayed without fail. His sports pools were outstanding and always fair. Generous, considerate and a great family man that provided an example for all who were fortunate to know him. We will miss you Bob, but will keep your memory and spirit throughout our times. Thank-you Bob!

Dear Pat and Family, I remember when Bobby first started at Airborne and people were asking, "who is the new guy with the crazy laugh?" Didn´t take us very long to realize what a special person he was. Bobby was a born leader and immediately got involved in the Union movement. During his many years as a Union Steward and Business Agent he saved countless jobs and set policy by helping negotiate many favorable contracts. All current and retired drivers owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his work.
Bobby loved being around people and organized countless outings. Coachman´s, Bears Tailgate, White Sox games, local golf outings and Union fundraisers were among the many activities he ran. He never aspired to be the center of attention, all he cared about was all of us having fun. Let´s not forget the dozens of pools he ran. They were a ton of work but helped him stay in constant contact with his family and friends.
Thanks Pat, Caitlin, Colleen and Casey for sharing him with us all these years. His friendship, laughter, kindness and selflessness meant so much to us and will be sorely missed!
See you on the other side, Airborne Ranger!

Dear Patti and family, I first met Bob when he came to work at airborne, we instantly hit it off. He invited me to participate in the Merrimac open there I made many new friends. We had many laughs and it was a great time but you always knew where Bob was, that beautiful laugh. As a stewart and business agent, he represented everyone with integrity and justice. Bob did so many things for so many people and you can be proud of that. Personally, after my accident, Bob spent many hours with me at the hospital. He was always quick with the laugh and entertained everyone. I always felt much, much better while he was around. He could command an audience. I'll always remember Bob for his kindness and generosity. He will be missed by many. RIP " my friend". God bless you all.

Dear Patti & Family,

Terry and I send you all our deepest heartfelt sympathies at this very sad time. I was fortunate to have known Bob for many years and to have lived across the street from him for a couple of those years. I so remember his deep voice in saying hello from across the street. I never was in town for the Fall Block Party but wished that I could have been. We will miss him as well.

Bob and I and Mike O'Donnell went to school at St. Ben's. We lived a few blocks from each other near Irving Park and Austin so our Bus ride (CTA); everyday to school was around 30 minutes. We loved playing basketball and hanging out together at Merrimac Park in Chicago. Bob was always fun to be around. He had a great sense of humor. Bob also loved baseball. We played for St. Bens our Senior year in High School and enjoyed great times together. After graduation from High School I asked Bob if his mom could get me a job at the bank she worked at. He asked his mom and my first "real" job was at Unity Savings bank near Harlem and Irving Park rd. I was very grateful to Bob for helping me get this job. I lost touch with Bob during college days, and did not catch up to him until recently. I was able to get his phone number and we had a good time talking. He and Pat invited my wife and I to their tail-gate party at their home with a hundred other people (friends from St. Bens); a few years ago and we loved catching up with so many people I hadn't seen in a long time. Bob always made people feel welcomed. I am sorry I missed out on the many years of not seeing Bob and staying in touch with him, but was glad I did finally catch up to him and share good old stories. Thank you Bob. We will miss you.

A thunderous laugh booming from another room.
And
After attending a stage play in which the leading man performed most of the play completely naked, Bob was introduced to the actor. Bob shook his hand and replied " I feel that I know pretty well already" (paraphrased)
