Robert Eckenrode Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2022.
Robert James Eckenrode, 91, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2022 in Lebanon, OH. Bob was recently predeceased by his beloved wife Ann C. Eckenrode of 66 years and survived by his two daughters Cathy (and Jim) DiBiagio and Beth (and Michael) Cennami. He was a loving, proud grandfather to Katie DiBiagio, James (and Caroline) DiBiagio and Zoe Cennami.

Bob had a wonderful, full life. He grew up in Jersey City, NJ and was the eldest of two children (Norma Caravella) of the late Norman and Helen Eckenrode. He took time off from his undergraduate degree to proudly serve in the Korean War; after which he completed his Engineering Degree from New York University in 1956. Also in 1956, Bob married his college sweetheart, Ann Romaine, in Chappaqua, NY on May 26. Later, while working for New York Telephone, he received his Executive MBA from Harvard University. Before moving to Lebanon, home was in Sunapee, NH where he and Ann enjoyed golf, skiing, and boating. There, he had many friends and was a well-respected member of the Sunapee community. Bob invested and actively participated in the Sunapee Harbor Riverway project.

.

Bob had a notable career in the Telecommunications industry. He rose to a high-level executive position at AT&T and NYNEX. He served on many boards including Duke University and Pace University. Bob was a natural teacher and taught Business Management classes at Pace University, subsequently receiving an award for his contributions. Bob was an advocate and supportive of women in business. He mentored and promoted many, as well as being a leader in supporting work-family solutions. Throughout his career, Bob was regarded as a visionary: thoughtful, creative and knowledgeable. His down-to-earth, open-minded respect for all was his trademark that led to his success.

Giving back to the community was extremely important to Bob. He supported many charities, was involved with his Church, and coached youth sports in town leagues. He was a generous philanthropist; helping others was a constant in his life. While working for AT&T, Bob received the Theodore Vail Award for putting his life at risk to rescue a drowning man.

Bob was a role model for integrity and hard work. His greatest legacy was his kindness, generosity and caring for others. Through his example and support, he encouraged his children and grandchildren to be their best selves. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Services for Bob and Ann will be held on October 15, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 724 Main Street, New London, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society (uvhs.org) or Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org).
