Robert Edmund Fabricant M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 31, 2024.
Point Pleasant Robert Edmund , N.J. - Fabricant M.D. Robert Edmund Fabricant, M.D., age 88, of Point Pleasant, New Jersey passed away on March 22, 2024. He was the beloved patriarch of a close-knit family and a celebrated community physician, who came from humble beginnings. Robert was the only child of Alice Condron Fabricant, an Irish Catholic nurse who lived together with her parents in a one-bedroom apartment on Ocean Avenue in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. She was a loving mother who encouraged her son to pursue his dreams through education, and she remained nearby to him for all of her years. Young Robert ("Bobby") was shaped by the Jesuits, first at Xavier High School in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and then at Georgetown University on the hilltop overlooking the Potomac River in the northwest corner of Washington, DC. What the Jesuits offered - rigorous academics, physical discipline and moral living - he fully embraced. Like his mother, Robert was called to serve others. His medical studies were completed at New York Medical College, located in the heart of the city, and they were followed by residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same institution. Just before that training, while completing an internship at Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Neptune, NJ, Robert ("Bob") met his soul mate, a young woman of devout faith, Miss Jackquelyn ("Jay") Hockenbury from the Town of Millstone, who herself had just begun studies at the Anne May School of Nursing. They shared beliefs and values, common to both her Methodist traditions and his Catholic upbringing. After a brief courtship, they were united in marriage and then lived the moral life together for more than 60 years, mostly in Brick, NJ, where they raised four children, but later in Point Pleasant, where they welcomed nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Following residency training and after a stint in the Regular Army, Robert ("Dr. Fab") joined a tight fraternity of exceptional physicians at Ocean Gynecological and Obstetrical Associates (OGOA), a hub for women's health care on the New Jersey shore, where he remained for 52 years, while delivering more than 5,000 babies. Robert, a recipient of the Kimball Medical Center Humanitarian Award, was uniquely suited to his profession, owing to his natural curiosity, heartfelt compassion, sound judgement and exceptional manual skills. Throughout his married life, if not at home or work, Robert almost certainly was on his boat, "Red Baron," plying the inland waterways or fishing the ocean beyond, always with family or friends at his side. In later years, Robert ("Pops," "Pop Pop," "Poppy Bob") overcame advanced melanoma, thanks to the latest immune therapies, and then held strong until the very end against the progressive effects of Parkinsonism and did so with patience and grace. In every stage of life, Robert's gift to those around him was his outward-leaning joy, combined with an easy manner, effortless kindness, never-ending optimism and twinkling good humor. Surviving Dr. Fabricant are his wife, Jackquelyn, and his children including Robin McGill and her husband George McGill, Esq., Robert E. Fabricant, Jr., Esq. and his wife Emilia Di Mayorca Fabricant, Christopher J. Fabricant, M.D. and his wife Malika Sahni-Fabricant, Ph.D., and Matthew Fabricant and Cynthia Lindstrom. Dr. Fabricant also is survived by nine grandchildren and their partners - Emma and Mark, Terence and Samantha, Eddie and Michaela, Kicca, Bobby and Libby, Ethan, Lila, Thibaut and Nicolas - and by two great grandchildren, Madeline and Lily. A viewing for Dr. Fabricant will be held on April 2, 2024 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy 88, Brick, NJ 08724. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 3, 2024 at 10 am in St. Catharine Church, 215 Essex Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ 07762. The committal will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, 707 Schoolhouse Road, Brielle, NJ 08730.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Fabricant. He had been my doctor for 50 years. My children are two of the 5,000 that he delivered. He once even looked at my home on Princeton Ave before purchasing the house in Pt. Pleasant. I gave him a strengthening wheel to help after his rotator cuff surgery and I would often get on his office floor to demonstrate exercises. My husband and I met several of you years ago waiting on line at Parker House when it was Wednesday lobster night! He was an amazing man and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolenses to the family.
Sincerely,
Linda Foy, Spring Lake, NJ
