Robert Gutman Obituary

Published by Troy Daily News on Nov. 29, 2012.
SIDNEY - Robert "Bobby Joe" Gutman, 79, of 933 Chestnut Ave. Sidney, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at his home.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1933, in Sidney, the son of the late Joe and Wilda (Gates) Gutman. He was married to Jean (White) Gutman, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by four children, Gayla Walker of Sidney, Brad Gutman and wife Jennie of Sidney, Kevin Gutman of New Madison and Rita Gutman of Mason; three stepchildren, Rick Higgins of Sidney, Jenyne Higgins and Dorothy White; daughter-in-law, Denise Gutman of Sidney; two sisters, Sondra Harris and Kenny Berger of Houston and Melody Schwan of Largo, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Shannon Smith and husband Matt, Andrea McGreevey and husband Jon, Summer Riffell and husband Jason, Daniel Gutman and wife Mandy, Tyler Gutman, Laura Gutman, Jordan Gutman, Kevin Gutman Jr., Kurtis Gutman and Jody Young and husband Matt; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Gutman, one daughter-in-law, Melody Gutman, one son-in-law, Samuel A. Walker Jr, one stepson, Terry White, one granddaughter, Valen Gutman, one sister, Star Slife and one brother-in-law, Jerry Slife.
Bobby Joe was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1403 in Sidney. He was a great singer and entertainer. He got his start on his father's radio show, Whistlin' Joe Gutman, in the 1940s.
He later toured the Midwest with The Ink Spots throughout the 1960s. In the late 1960s he owned and operated his own record company, Gayla Records, named after his oldest daughter.
He went on to be a successful salesman - everything from life insurance to cars - but he never stopped singing. In fact, he was known to break out in song at any moment.
More than an entertainer, singer or salesman, Bobby Joe was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be remembered and missed by all who loved him, including his beloved dog, Wheatie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave, Sidney, with Bobby Joe's grandson, Daniel Gutman officiating.
Burial will follow at Fletcher Cemetery in Fletcher. The family will receive friends Friday from 11 a.m. until the hour of service.
Memorials may be made to the Fraternal Order of Elks, Aerie 1403 in Sidney. Guestbook condolences and expressions of sympathy may be made to the Gutman family at www.cromesfh.com

I just listened to a record Bobby Joe cut years ago with my dad and sister backing him up. He was so enthusiastic about his music. My dad and Sis always looked forward to his visits. Our thoughts are with the family

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you. I remember him playing music with my dad (Dorman Centers). I know the two of them are playing and signing together up in heaven.

My favorite memory of Bobby is he could not remember my name and who I was. He always called me Cindy, and called Cindy my name. It got to be a joke and I enjoyed hearing him laugh about it. He was a great person. He will be greatly missed. Chris Copeland(Gerstner)
