Robert Maxwell "Max" Hoag

May 26, 1947 - December 16, 2024

Robert Maxwell Hoag, affectionately known as Max, passed away on December 16, 2024, in Bluffton, South Carolina. Born on May 26, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan, Max grew up in Big Rapids, Manistee, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, alongside his parents, Robert and Valeria Hoag, and his younger brother, Doug.

Max graduated from Western Michigan University in 1969 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, majoring in General Business with a minor in Automotive Engineering Technology. That same year, he enlisted in the Navy Reserves through the Aviation Officer Candidate program. Stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, he earned his Solo Flight Certificate flying a Beechcraft T-34B Mentor. After being honorably discharged in December 1969, Max continued serving his country as the Leader of Local Board No. 43 for the Selective Service System in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In November 1970, Max began his professional career as a Marketing Analyst at Ford Motor Company's Parts and Service Division. He later joined E.F. MacDonald Motivation Co., which became Carlson Marketing Group (CMG), where he enjoyed a distinguished 26-year career culminating in his role as Vice President. A skilled leader and motivator, Max managed sales and marketing activities for CMG's automotive division, growing key accounts like Chrysler and organizing global events. His achievements earned him accolades such as membership in CMG's Goalmakers Club and the CMG Fellows Award for sales excellence.

Max married the love of his life, Sally Groskopf on May 9, 1969, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together, they raised their children, Bonnie Ann and Ryan Maxwell, in Rochester Hills, Michigan. In retirement, Max and Sally became cherished members of the Berkeley Hall Golf community in Bluffton. Max found great joy in golf and was passionate about playing on some of the world's most iconic courses.

Max is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sally; his children, Bonnie and Ryan (Alysha); his grandchildren, Jack and Charlie; his brother, Doug; and the family dog, Abby.

A celebration of Max's life will be held at Berkeley Hall on Friday, December 20, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Max's legacy of love, leadership, and humility will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

Max was a wonderful mentor to me when I was a newbie at CMG on the Chrysler account. Mostly though, he was a kind and humorous man max gave me opportunities I may not have had if he hadn´t been in his role. He was one of the good guys. Kerry Olejniczak

I knew Sally from volunteering with her at God's Goods Thrift Store through Church of the Cross in Bluffton, SC. I know that Max was taking good care of Sally at home and was a very devoted husband. God bless the Hoag family. Cathy Gaffga

Although only part timer here at Berkeley Hall. I had the privilege and pleasure of playing golf with Max a number of times over the past several years. He was always a true gentleman and had a quiet strength about him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I hope over time all the good memories of Max will help the family find peace.

Sincere condolences, Tuck Nason
