Robert Jenness Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 13 to Dec. 14, 2010.
JENNESS, Robert (Bob) Peacefully on Saturday, December 11, 2010 in Ottawa, surrounded by family and friends, after a short but courageous fight with cancer, shortly after his 80th birthday. He lived his last days as he had lived his life - with dignity, courage, and with more concern for those around him than for himself. Survived by Viola , his loving and devoted wife and best friend for 40 years; children Elisabeth (Don Smith) and Craig (Barbara), to whom he showed unconditional love and support always; grandchildren Matthew, Laura and Samuel whose presence lit his eyes with joy, brothers Stuart and Pete, his sisters-in-law Mary, Laura, Leila, Hoda, Randa, Pierrette, brothers-in-law William, Wim, Joe (deceased), his former wife Margaret, and many nephews and nieces who were dear to him. Son of the eminent anthropologist and explorer, the late Diamond Jenness and the late Eilleen Jenness. Born and raised in Ottawa, a graduate of Queen's University, Bob had a long and distinguished career in public service, including with the Departments of External Affairs, Northern Affairs, and Manpower and Immigration. He retired as a senior executive of the Economic Council of Canada. In his professional life, he was known for his intellect, integrity and his willingness to support colleagues. His friends and family will miss most his zest for life, his humour and humility, and especially his warm heart, which showed itself most vividly when someone he loved was in need. A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the ICU unit of the Ottawa General Hospital, for their excellent care and compassion. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel Of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor), Ottawa from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Thursday, December 16. Donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A Memorial will be held in the spring, after the snows and the immediate pain of the many that will miss him, have melted.

I now live in Dubai and just saw that Bob had passed away. He was a wonderful friend and mentor and an insightful and simply brilliant writer and economic analyst of the highest order. My condolences to his family.

Dear Viola
I was so saddened to hear the news of Bob's death. I was so pleased to have finally met the man with the lovely telephone voice when I would phone you.I know how much you will miss him as your new life begins but he will always be beside you.
Remember this:
"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal"
"Love leaves memories no one can steal"
God be with you in this difficult time

Bob will be remembered for many reasons, including his great empathy and willingness to assist the "underdog", his gentle demeanor and charm, and the love and respect he evoked from those who knew him. We will miss our dear friend, and send our sympathies to Viola, Craig and Elisabeth.

Bob was many things to many people whose lives he unconditionally enriched, giving always more of himself than he received or expected in return. To say that he will be missed would be an unforgivable understatement!

RIP Bob,I will always remember those games of golf we shared at Larrimac in the 50's.

Bob was a great colleague with a ready wit and warm smile. But equally importantly, he should be remembered for his significant contributions to Canada through his thoughtful and balanced analyses, and his clear, compelling and comprehensive writing of many Economic Council reports.
