Robert Kerr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14, 2014.
Robert Douglas Kerr Feb 6, 1930 - Aug 8, 2014 With heavy hearts, but incredibly great memories, the family announces that Bob passed away peacefully on Friday August 8, 2014 after 84 rich, full years. Bob is survived by his wife Arlene, his brother Gordon, his sister Joan, three sons, Glen (Donna), Guy (Cheryl), Gregor, 5 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was born in Moose Jaw, grew up in Lethbridge and moved and settled in Calgary with a brief interlude to study law at U of A. Before his graduation he already had an impressive resume totaling 28 jobs ranging from sheepherder to Fuller Brushman. While in law school he met the love of his life, Arlene, and they were married shortly after graduation in 1954. He ultimately started his own practice and finally retired at the age of 80. Known to all as a gentleman, a do'er and a jokester, Bob embarked on many pursuits. A long time Boy Scout he became a leader and received a 50-year recognition award. He joined the Foothills Lodge 174 in 1961, and subsequently became a member of the Al Azhar Shrine, Sabre Patrol, Air Corps, Legion of Honor, Greeters and Royal Order of Jesters #42. He will be fondly remembered for starting the meetings with a round of stories and jokes. Bob joined the Rotarians, and was active for 38 years until his death. Bob and Arlene both were long-time, active square dancers with the Calgary Stampede and his volunteer efforts rewarded him with calling and dancing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2nd. He was physically active his entire life most notably at the YMCA where his love of running culminated the completion of 5 marathons with a PB of 3:40. Bob stayed active in the law society till his passing and will be missed in the Senior Lawyers Group.

Goodbye Akela, Noble, Runner, Caller, House Champion, Husband, Dad, Grandfather, Friend and Mentor - you will be missed and lovingly remembered.

A celebration of Bob's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19th at the Al Azhar Shrine Centre, 5225-101 Street N.W.

In lieu of Flowers please consider donations to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

I have just received news of Bob's death.

I'd known Bob for years as a lawyer, neighbour, friend. A real gentleman and a real doer. He and I were very involved in the Senior Lawyers Section of the Canadian Bar Association. Bob was the guts of Senior Lawyers from which so many derived so many happy memories and enjoyment ... He knew how to get things done better than anyone I ever knew.

I was very sad to hear that Mr. Kerr had passed away. My siblings and I have fond memories of him when we were kids/young adults. It was great that he was able to attend Mom and Dad's anniversary party in June so that we could catch up with him one last time. My deep condolences to Mrs. Kerr and the rest of the family.

Thank you for the work you have done for us in previous years as a lawyer. Bob and Arlene spent many a night talking and laughing together at Pizza night in Lakeview. If our parents Ray and Eleanor Allen were missing calls on a Tuesday night, we knew they with the Kerr's, having a wonderful time. He will be missed dearly by them, and all that knew him.

That Bob was remarkable is obvious. I am particularly thankful for his dedication and his person -- both of which he bestowed with love on the 18th Cub Pack for decades. And a generous "thank you" to Arlene and their children for supporting Bob as he lived an honourable life of service to others. I hold you all in my heart.

I met Bob at the reading of my grandfathers will in 1965 when I was age 20. Grandad had left me and my 18 year old cousin, Darrell Cook, 2 old houses in NW Calgary. Bob said " You boys can go ahead and sell these and buy a new car or take a trip, or, you have the makings of a small real estate company here so why not try your hand at building something". 49 years later I look back at what was the best advice I could have ever been given. I know I am only one of many that he touched over the years.

Nell Bowerman, Paddy (Rob), Judy (Ron) send our sincere wishes to you Arlene and family. We go a long time back with first knowing you and Bob in Highwood where we babysat the three boys. We've often wondered how you all are. Bob handled a few legal matters for Paddy (Rob) back in 1973. Our sympathies go out to you and all the family. Bob will never be forgotten and held in high regard by many. Nell, Paddy and Judy

Some of my fondest memories are riding with Bob and Arlene down such memorable routes as "Panty Lane" and across the neighbouring lands where Bob would invariably yell "Geronimo" so we could have a great gallop across the fields. Always with a smile on his face-a true gentleman-your Dad/husband will be dearly missed. I'm away for August but my thoughts are with you Arlene, Glen, Guy and Gregor

We will miss Bob so much. There are so many great Stampede memories of Bob with Arlene by his side. Square dancing, talking, laughing, having a party. Rain or shine, hot or cold Bob was always enjoying every minute he was with his square dancing friends. His cowboy hats were his trade mark. We are honoured to have him as a great friend for over 25 years. Our hearts go out to Arlene. Robyn and Mike Bagby

Eulogizing Bob Kerr is not a difficult endeavour.
I met him in 1971 when he agreed to take me on as his articling student. I spent the next 19 years practising law with him, first as his student, then his associate, and finally his partner.
Our association, or "marriage" if you will, was a honeymoon throughout. He mentored me as only Bob could do.
I learned from him the importance of honesty and integrity. That your word is your bond. The importance of courtesy and to always be a gentleman. Sure, he taught me about the practice of law, but the life lessons were every bit, or more important.
He taught me the importance of, and satisfaction in, volunteerism. Bob, of course, belonged to everything. Rotary, Scouts, Calgary Stampede, Shriners, and on and on.
I was privileged and very fortunate to have Bob as my mentor, partner and friend.
He was a great guy and a true gentleman and made this world a better place.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Arlene, Glen, Guy and Gregor and the entire Kerr family.
I will miss you Bob.

Dear Arlene,

Billie and I are saddened by the news of Bob's death. He was a great Rotarian as well as a fine fraternity brother. We only regret that our wandering life style has prevented us from keeping in closer touch. Much love, Fred

Linda and I are away in Copenhagen at the moment. So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a valued member of the 18th Scout Group. So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. We have many fond memories volunteering with Bob (and Arlene) over the years on both DTA and Reception Committees of the Calgary Stampede. He was a friend and a gentleman. Our condolences to you Arlene and Glen and the rest of the family.

August 12, 2014

Arlene and Family, You lost an amazing husband, a role model as a father, and a very proud grandfather. There are many of us who lost an awesome friend who shared his life so openly with us. Bob's ability to connect with people and share his abilities and time with community service is part of his legacy.
His willingness to be involved in so many different areas is a part of who he is. Bob was a gentle, sharing individual who was always there to reach out to everyone. We will cherish the many wonderful memories of Bob and the Kerr Family for the time we spent together at Bar KC. Our thought and prayers are will all of you. The Carters
