Robert Lawler Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from Dec. 10 to Dec. 11, 2005.
LAWLER _ Dr. Robert Huston ("Bob") died peacefully at the West Vancouver Care Centre on December 8, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Nettie Louise, and his children, Susan of Vancouver and Robert of Victoria. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Arthur Lawler. Bob was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on January 18, 1924. He graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine, in 1948. He took post-graduate training in Psychiatry in Salem, Oregon; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Seattle, Washington. He was Chief of Psychiatry at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba from May 1960 to August 1975. He was in the private practice of Psychiatry in Vancouver from August 1975 to December 31, 1999. Bob was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada), a life member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and a member of the American Orthopsychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Association. He was an Affiliate Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and an Associate member of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry. Bob loved his work, but his beautiful wife, Nettie, and their two children always came first for him. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father and will be greatly missed. Bob's family wishes to thank the staff at the West Vancouver Care Centre (especially his nurse, Gerry), his physiotherapist Julie Bereziak, and Tammy Watson and her staff (Rachel, Ronald, and Benedict) at the Home Care West agency for the wonderful care they gave Bob. At Bob's request, no funeral service will be held. A celebration of his life will take place in the new year. Donations to the Parkinson Society Canada in his memory would be appreciated by his family.
