My Captain aboard USS Detroit (Dec 1969). As a Quartermaster I was in daily observance of his leadership, ship handling and our many discussions of just where we were at any given moment. So great to see him in 2000, a visit cut short because he had a sailboat race and crew awaiting.

Mac and I had been friends since the 6th grade. In July 1943 he and I both enlisted for Navy and both ended up at Williams College in a V-12 program for a semester, the off to Annapolis for Mac and Boots for me. Our friendship continued thru and after the war when he introduced us to his lovely Bride Gunvor, Formerly Miss Sweden - I, nor my friends, were able to understand how Bob and Gunvor could understand each other but were not surprized. He could do anything- and he did most all of it. Thirteen of us in the HS class of '43 had a letter group set up by the father of one of us had us write letters and send them to his NY office. The letters were mimeographed and sent out to each of us where ever we were serving. The collection of 161 letters dated from July 43 to Dec 45 representing Army, Marine, AirCorps Transporters - and Of course NAVY is in the Library of Congress. Bob and Gunvor were a joy to be around! Bob's positive attitude was contagious. Bob and Gunvor were the happiest 2 people, just being together. They had an incredible life together and raised 2 lovely daughter along the way. May the two of them Rest In Peace. It was a special time just being in their presence❣
