Robert Paterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2016.
The Venerable Gary Paterson 1939 - 2016
Gary Paterson died on Tuesday August 16 at Royal Inland Hospital as the result of a stroke. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Anne Paterson-Welsh (Warren), Sharon Paterson (Nick Heap) and Sarah Stratton(Len) and granddaughters, Isabel, Ella, Imogen and Genevieve. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Hood(Graham) and brother-in-law, Peter DeVille (Dorothy) and 7 nieces and nephews and their families. Predeceased by nieces Pamela DeVille and Becky Halsey. Gary was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario and spent his teen years in Brantford, where he met Barbara. After graduating from Huron College (London) he was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. Gary served parishes in Windsor, Churchill, Prince Rupert, and Regina. After retirement in 2001, Gary and Barb moved to Kamloops where he enjoyed more time for travelling, canoeing, squash, swimming and cross-country skiing. Gary loved to teach and preach, and continued to do so in retirement -- both in church settings and for Kamloops Adult Learner Society. Many people in Prince Rupert, Regina and Kamloops will remember his stimulating and challenging sermons and workshops. We also remember his sense of fun and his harmonica playing. He loved spending time with family and delighted in his granddaughters. In the last 4 years some of his activities have been curtailed because of his journey with leukemia, but he continued to walk, read and study. The family wishes to thank the staff of 5 North and the Cancer Clinic at RIH. Much appreciation to Drs. David Ritenburg, Christiaan Brink, Russell Mosewich and Michael Delorme. Celebration of Life service will be at St. Paul's Cathedral, Kamloops, at 11am on Monday, August 22. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, The BC Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice.

Barbara and family,
We were married in Prince Rupert at the Cathedral in December 1980 and Dean Patterson was very wise and helpful. We lived across the street from you on 4th Ave. W in the white house. My husband was the hospital administrator there.
I have been out visiting my mother in Ontario and went to church with her today. The notice about Dean Paterson was in the bulletin. I just wanted to express my condolences and tell you that over the years I have thought about your husband many times with much gratitude. May the Lord fill you with His comfort and peace.

Dear Barbara & family,
Sending my love, sympathy and prayers to you all. Gary was a big part of Gerry's & my life, and our children's & grandchildren's, while we were at All Saints in Regina. He was a true man of God. Have missed his playing the harmonica at the services & his wit, inteligence & inspiring sermons. Love & prayers, Carol Alexander.

Dean Paterson was an important figure in my childhood. I am grateful for the gift of his kindness, humour, patience and willingness to include me in both his congregation and family. My heartfelt condolences to the Paterson family.

Gary was a dear friend whose wit and laughter often filled the squash court as we played many squash games together over the years (and who can forget his usual manner of banging his racquet on the back wall to intimidate his opponent). Enjoyed his unique sense of humour and description of his and Barb's many travels to museums and cathedrals in Europe.
He will be truly missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of Gary's death. He was a good mentor for me as I was discerning to be a priest. I remember with joy the years at All Saints. I also remember Barbara's strong voice for feminism and justice. I will always remember his wisdom and humour. We're All Saints!
