Robert Sylvain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2017.

Robert David Sylvain, age 91, passed away April 8, 2017 at St. Mary's Home, West Hartford CT. Born in Fitchburg, MA, January 26, 1926, son of the late Wilfrid Michel and Eva (Bolduc) Sylvain. Robert was a long time resident of Granby, CT having moved there in 1956 from Hartford, CT. He was retired from the Granby Board of Education where he was the custodian at the Kelly Lane School. Prior to that, he had a long career as a machinist and worked many years at Windsor Manufacturing. His work ethics, attention to detail and problem solving earned him recognition as a master machinist. He is predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Jane "Jeanne" (Pomerleau) Sylvain and his son, Barry Robert Sylvain. He was also predeceased by his sister, Anita Sylvain Poulin and brothers, Gerard Andre, Laurent Lucien, and Eugene Adrian Sylvain. Robert is survived by his son, David Albert and Sue Ellen Hollis Sylvain of Andover, CT; grandson, Bryan Jeffery and Shannon Kittrick-Sylvain; great granddaughter, Ella Francis Sylvain; and great grandson, Theodore Alloyicious Sylvain all of Portland, Oregon. He also leaves a brother, Normand Roger Sylvain of Milford, CT; and sisters-in-law, Loraine Pomerleau Sylvain of Granby, CT and Jeanne Boudreau Sylvain of Vernon, CT; and many nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. Robert was a veteran of World War II where he served as a Surgeon's Assistant in the operating room of the 124th Evacuation Hospital in Germany and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was honored as a patriot when he was asked to be the Grand Marshall for the 2003 Granby Veteran's Day Parade. A very big event in Robert's life after he returned from the war was celebrated Labor Day, September 6, 1948 when he and his brother Gerard married sisters Jane "Jeanne" Clara and Loraine Ann Pomerleau in a double wedding. In retirement, Robert enjoyed woodworking in his home shop where his mechanical skills lead him to make small wooden toys, including his famous 'Flapjacks'. He loved the look on children's' faces when he gave them away and showed them how to make the acrobats do their maneuvers. He loved and played lots of golf. He was an avid cribbage player and Friday evening games with family were very special to him. He had a great sense of humor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, 120 West Granby Rd., Granby, CT. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Granby Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Saturday, April 22, 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the Mass at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St, Granby.
