Published by Legacy Remembers from May 28 to May 29, 2010.
VOITLE, ROBERT A.

Dr. Robert A. Voitle, devoted husband, father and teacher, passed away on Friday, May 21 from complications due to leukemia and lung cancer. He was 72 years old.

Dr. Voitle, a native of Parkersburg, W. Va., held Bachelor's and Master's degrees from West Virginia University, 1962 and 1964 respectively; and a Ph. D. in poultry science from the University of Tennessee, in 1969.

The University of Florida marked the beginning of Dr. Voitle's professional career as a professor where he spent 10 years on the faculty of the poultry science department in the College of Agriculture. He then moved to California where he worked as the head of the poultry science department for California Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo, Ca.

In 1981, Dr. Voitle brought his family to Auburn, Ala. where he became Dean of Auburn University's College of Agriculture (Ag Hill). Over the next 18 years, Dr. Voitle played a key role in the development of now well-established Ag Hill programs such as the intern program and the Ag. Alumni Association. He also helped establish the successful Ag. Ambassadors program and was fundamental to the construction of Auburn University's first computer lab in 1982. In 1999, Dr. Voitle stepped down from the Associate Dean position, but continued to teach as a professor of Poultry Science until his retirement in March, 2010. He also served as the past and current president of the Village Squares square dance club. He and his wife, Linda, enjoyed 24 years of square dancing together.

Dr. Voitle is survived by his wife, Linda - Auburn, Ala.; sons Chris - Gainesville, Fla. and Robert (Diana) - Montgomery, Ala.; daughter Elizabeth (Charles Langley) - Mobile, Ala.; grandsons Blair - Plantation, Fla. and Cody - Gainesville, Fla.; great-grandsons Noah and Christopher - Plantation, Fla.; and brother Jim and several nephews, a niece, great nephews and nieces - W. Va. He is preceded in death by daughter Vanessa and his parents.

A memorial service will be held in Auburn at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29. The family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Dr. Voitle to either the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (100 Chase Park S., Suite 220, Birmingham, AL 35244; 1-888-560-9700; www.leukemia-lymphoma.org) or the American Cancer Society (P.O. Linda and kids,

I just learned of Bob's passing while attending meetings in Athens, GA this week. He and I had a lot of pleasant moments together as we traveled and worked. He was a great guy as a friend and as a co-worker. He will be sorely missed. God bless all of you at this time in your life and give you peace and comfort.

I will remember Dr. Voitle as a kind, soft-spoken man. As a young journalist and later as an Auburn employee, Dr. Voitle was always helpful and supportive. I pray comfort to your family.
