Robert Whitley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2024.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Earl Whitley on January 25, 2024 in Vallejo, California. Robert was 75 years old. He was born on January 11, 1948, in Marianna, Arkansas. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Vernis Whitley.

Robert spent his formative years in Oakland, California where he recognized the importance of civil rights and respect for all people. In 1964, at the age of 16, Robert graduated from Oakland High School. After finishing school, he went to work for his father's auto repair shop for a period of time and this is where his lifelong love of cars and motorcycles developed and flourished.

In his professional life, Robert worked more than 30 years for Pacific Bell as a Communications Linemen and later as an Occupational and Safety Specialist. He was dedicated to ensuring the well-being of his colleagues and creating a safe work environment for everyone. This dedication of well-being spilled over to his family and friends.

In 1968, Robert wed the love of his life, Jean Adams. This 56 year marital union resulted in 3 beautiful children - Denise, Damon and Devina. Robert was a dedicated husband and father. In this role, it was his belief to create the most comfortable homelife for his family.

Robert was known for his sense of humor and storytelling skills. He had a knack for making people laugh and always had a good story to tell. His friends and family will cherish the memories of his entertaining anecdotes for years to come.

Outside of work and family, Robert enjoyed his hobbies. His hobbies included music, cars, motorcycles, fishing, boating and watching classic cowboy TV/movies. These hobbies allowed him to find solace and connect with the past and future; the speed of the road and the serenity of water.

Robert is survived by his wife, Jean E. Whitley - Vallejo, CA; daughter, Denise Whitley Smith and son-in-law Kyle V Smith of Chicago, IL; son, R. Damon Whitley of Brandywine, MD; daughter, Devina E. Whitley of Las Vegas, NV; fur-baby, Daisy. Grandsons - MiHaloni Whitley, Mensah Ajanaku, Jr., Julius Ajanaku, and Wade Smith. Brother, Delmos Whitley, and sisters Trena Whitley and Latrell Williams. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and out-laws.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for the summer to honor Robert's memory and share stories of his remarkable life. Details of the service will be announced at a later date.

Robert Earl Whitley will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His lively personality, and love for his family will forever be remembered. May he rest in peace with warts and all.

As we grew up I remember my oldest brother always providing us with something to ride on. My brother like his dad always working on something. Robert made sure we had options , bikes, scooters, flexie (you had to see it) :-). I recall us being the only family in the neighborhood with a bicycle built for two courtesy of my big brother Robert. My dad had nicknames for all of us, Robert being logical always working on something was known as "The Professor".
I will see you later Robert. I know you will have a story and a drink to share with your baby sister..
