Roberta Robert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2025.
Roberta Sue Robert, known to most as Sue, passed peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025,at Snyder Village Health Center in Metamora, IL. Sue was born in Springfield, IL, on July 5, 1937, missing her favorite holiday by only a few hours! Her parents were Clifford Joseph Robert and Edna Margaret Voltz,. She is survived by two sisters, Lee Robert-Mosca, of Turin, Italy and Ann Robert Winget of Peoria, IL, as well as two nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, former teachers in the Aurora, IL, public schools. Sue was a much-loved and incredible teacher, beginning her career in Elgin and concluding with a combined 30+ years at Nichols and Willard schools in Evanston, IL. During her 38 year career, she taught grades 2-8, always believing the best of her students and guiding them toward success. She also taught one year in France and one year in Japan as a civilian with the U.S. Airforce, traveling extensively on weekends and holidays. Sue had a deep interest in history, which she shared in such a way that drew others to it. Her love of travel led her to bike through Europe in the late 50s, when such endeavors were rare. In the summer of 1968, with her sister and a friend, she drove the ALCAN Highway from Chicago to Alaska - 3,000 miles on a gravel road, camping in a tent, and racking up 8,000 miles on a VW squareback automobile. She was a long time member of Chicago Rocks and Minerals, serving on the Board and writing for their newsletter, the "Pick and Dop" winning several national awards. Over the years she acquired and fine rock and fossil collection.

Her other great joy was as a birder, often serving as a guide and acting as bird monitor in nearby Perkins Woods in Evanston. She collected amazing bird carvings by area carvers. Her love of local history resulted in her serving as docent for Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston. After retirement, she enjoyed attending programs at the Wilmette library as well as the Evanston Symphony. She became active member at the Levy Senior Center, spearheading the organization of a Women's Senior basketball team. She also delighted in performing with their singing group, the Shower Singers. She will be remembered by her family and friends and by the many students whose lives she touched.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1012 Lake St., Evanston, IL, 60201, the Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave, Evanston, IL, 60202, or charity of the donor's choice.
