Roberta Russell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2025.
Roberta Russell, a dedicated student of life, writer, and advocate for effective psychotherapy, passed away on December 23, 2024. She was a passionate observer of the human experience, an inquisitive researcher, and an influential voice in psychology, nutrition, and personal development.

Roberta was best known for her work alongside the renowned British psychiatrist R.D. Laing, with whom she co-authored R.D. Laing & Me: Lessons in Love (1992). This research-based novel vérité chronicled her relationship with Laing and explored the depths of psychotherapy and human connection. Her dedication to the field was also evident in her Report on Effective Psychotherapy: Legislative Testimony (1981, updated in 1994), which examined the effectiveness of various therapeutic approaches and was published in multiple languages.

A pioneer in self-directed health and wellness, Roberta created the Report on Permanent Weight Loss (2016), presenting a unique and pragmatic approach to sustainable health, which she later shared at Columbia Teachers College. She also founded Mutual Alliance Therapy Workshops, a groundbreaking initiative fostering therapeutic partnerships and self-improvement through collaborative efforts. Her work in this area earned her a 1994 Social Innovations Award in the U.K.

Beyond her written contributions, Roberta was a longtime host of Lifetalk, a New York City cable television program featuring interviews with influential figures in psychology, medicine, and environmental issues. Her writings appeared in esteemed publications such as Psychologie Heute, The Japan Times, The Psychologist (U.K.), and many others. She was also a columnist for The West View News and The Meredith News, where she shared her insights on life, relationships, and self-improvement.

In addition to her literary and psychological endeavors, Roberta was a real estate broker and owner of High Domain, LLC, where she applied her keen observational skills and business acumen to the world of New York properties.

Roberta Russell's work touched the lives of many, offering wisdom, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Her legacy lives on through her books, interviews, and the countless individuals who benefited from her dedication to understanding the human experience.

She is survived by her community of friends, fellow thinkers, and learners who will continue to be inspired by her work and her commitment to meaningful, evidence-based change.

Rest in peace, Roberta. Your words and ideas will endure.
