Robin Mello Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2025.
Robin Eugene Mello passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2025. He was born on November 22, 1953, son of Robert and Geneva. Robin was raised in Spring Valley, California, for most of his childhood and graduated from Monte Vista High School.

Robin met his wife, Barbara, while she was attending Grossmont College and he was working as a security guard. He walked her to her car after late night classes. He later earned his associates degree from Grossmont College in 1984.

Robin's life was marked by a deep sense of duty to both his country and community. He proudly served in the United States Army for two years, earning a National Defense Service Medal and commendations for his expertise in sharpshooting.

At the age of 24, Robin began what would be a long and respected career with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after graduating from the Academy in 1977. He served in multiple communities in Southern California, before being stationed permanently near his home of El Cajon. Robin was known as an excellent instructor and mentor, and was regularly tasked with training new recruits and shaping the next generation of officers. He also volunteered to help Boy Scouts earn their shooting merit badges for several years. His calm demeanor and extensive knowledge earned him the trust and admiration of his peers.

At home, Robin was a devoted husband and a steadfast father to his two daughters, Stephanie and Diana. While a man of few words, his love was unmistakable, expressed through his unwavering presence and dependability. He made great effort to be there for family events like dance recitals, swim meets, camping trips, or simply playing cards and board games at home even while working late night graveyard shifts.

Robin's devotion to his family extended into his later years as a deeply involved grandfather. Known lovingly as "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren, his presence was a constant source of comfort, stability, and love - cheering from the sidelines, showing up when it mattered most, and always putting his family first. He was especially attentive to Barbara during times of illness, exemplifying his commitment to his wife and family through action and care.

Robin had a lifelong love for ham radio, reading, camping, and marksmanship. He was known for his quiet generosity. Robin also made it a point to stay active in life, often seen walking around Hillsdale Middle School with hand-weights in tow to ensure he could keep up with his grandchildren. A man of few complaints and many contributions, Robin consistently put the needs of others before his own, offering strength, stability, and support to anyone lucky enough to know him.

Robin is survived by his daughters Stephanie and Diana; and his grandchildren Haywood, Theodore, Elizabeth, Alessio, and Gianna. His gentle strength and generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the CHP 11-99 Foundation (https://chp11-99.org/) to honor Robin's life of service and his strongly held value of the importance of education.

Robin and I were CHP Academy classmates. Although life happens and we don´t get to keep track of our classmates life journey, it stings when one of our own passes. Rest in Peace my CHP brother.

I´m missing my brother, whose passing shocked me. I was looking forward to walking with him, when the mornings warmed up. I´m glad he enjoyed his daughter´s families. I ask God to have mercy on his soul.
